Overall with audio, I have been very tempted to jsut buy a decent stand alone audio recorder and whip up a home made clapper board, and sync the audio/video in post. :D

Ha!  I've been considering doing the exact same thing.  :)

Great Minds! :D

Any suggestions for audio recorders?  :icon_lol: :tongue2:

Heres my modded Contour

And here you can see where the cable goes in relation to the original microphone hole.

Call me cheap but, I ended up putting a piece of Scotch tape over the mic on the Gopro in the last video I made. It actually worked fairly well with the open back on it. I'm still going to get an external mic though for v-logging.

Would be awesome from behind the helmet too. Listen to how lurvly that Ducati sounds mmmm  :thumb:

There was a person on ADVrider that had like a 3 foot rod coming off his luggage rack that had the camera mounted to it. They said it provided great footage, but riding on bumpy roads basically killed the video.

Cool vids btw Hawaiin!

Looks good spectre.  Sounds good too. I wouldn't have thought about putting the mic behind the seat. Good idea

It's a little muffled, so I might bring it a little closer to the battery box, or bump up the gain a touch and see what happens. Got a 3 day weekend coming up, could take a trip on the closest thing that passes for twisties up here and see how it goes.

To sync the audio you don't need a Clapper. YOu can either...

1 - Stand in front of the camera and clap your hands together. Then match up the footage with your clapping audio and you're done.

2 - On the move, swipe your finger in front of the recording lens and say "Swipe swipe". Then matching it in post ir easy and close enough is good enough.

3 - If you have the camera facing YOU, tap the side of your helmet as you say "tap tap".

nicely done spectre, it did seem a bit muffled, but a huge improvement for sure!

good tips also Mister!

Picked up a jack to mod my Contour today.  From what I've seen online, I should be able to mount the jack into the base and not have to run wires out.  Now I gotta see if I can refind the discussion where someone was gonna set it up so that the internal mic still worked when the external wasn't plugged in.  Spectre, I assume that you've just got your internal mic disconnected altogether?

I've not looked seriously into digital audio recorders yet, as the funds have needed to be allocated elsewhere.  Gotta make do with what I've got at the moment.  (Well, that and a $2 bare 3.5mm jack from the local electronics store.   :)  )

Yeah, I just desoldered the onboard mic and wired the new connection in it's place. I considered the switching idea, but in reality it would have mean a lot of messing about for a function that really wouldn't get used in my applications.

I'd ideally like to use mine for things like playing paintball and mountain biking where I'd likely not need an external mic or the wires hanging down, so if I can do it without it being a HUGE deal, I'd like to.

On the other hand, maybe I'll just pick up a used or refurbed one for $100 or something for those activities.  :)

Couple of clips from my Drift HD170 Stealth.  It's mounted with the suction cup mount to the windscreen of my CBR.  Between the windscreen not being 100% stable and the suction cup mount itself introducing a bit of vibration, these vids are pretty shaky.  Audio is from an external mic attached to the Drift.  It's not placed in any optimal position, just hung behind the windscreen.

YouTube has an option to reduce the shakyness after you UL the vid when they're doing their conversion.  I haven't tried that yet, but I'm gonna reupload one of those clips and choose that option to do a comparison.  I imagine that it'll degrade the image quality even moreso than their conversion already does.

testing my helmet mount around town. should have mounted it lower, but it turned out ok. Thinking of mounting another lower on the other side to get different angles.
