I find the GS perfectly comfortable for touring. I'm 6'2" and have done quite a lot of touring, including a couple of 1000km days with no problems. I have a sheepskin seat cover which I find works really well, not sure where it came from as the previous owner sold it to me with the bike.

The longest I ever did on my GS500E was from the Alabama Gulf Coast up to Grand Rapids Michigan and back South. Around 2200 miles in total and here is what I recall...

Basic tools are a must, duct tape, light gauge wire, extra spark plugs, a tire repair kit, the importance of maps and back up plans. The stock seat never bothered me too much and I'm 6' 155 LB and to be honest, after the first few days your butt get's so numb it won't make much difference. Carry extra fuel for you and the bike, snack and water breaks are very important. Each gas break I'd walk around for 15 min and drink a soda and energy bar at least. Get your gear luggage situation down well in advance and do a few test runs. I camped along my trip and with all my gear it took a few days to get it organized just right. Also, avoid wearing a backpack while riding it will add tons of strain to your shoulders. At least once a day check your chain, sprockets, and tires, and oil level along with a visual inspection of things. I lost a header bolt on interstate and almost lost another if it weren't for a quick visual check. Good luck!
