Q:Why did they decide to call it the "Harley Owners Group?"
A:Because the term "Special Ed" was already taken.

I imagine the dogs are broken or severely bent. Will involve taking the whole case apart? adidasguy is a god and will know.

Maybe if it was a GS500 we'd know what to do?

My favorite 2 city names I remember from growing up in DSM:  What Cheer    and   Podunk

Ah, my first bike: Kawa 125 1972 I think. Bought from a dealer in Ames and rode home from college to Highland Park area on Cornell Street and surprised my parents.   :icon_lol:

Some bikes have their oil drain bolt close to another bolt that goes up into the transmission that has a spring on it. Take this bolt out by accident and lose the spring without noticing and your bike will no longer shift out of 1st gear.

Yamaha transmissions have some history of losing 2nd gear ~ seems to depend on how hard previous owners abused them through misuse and/or neglect. You will probably have to drop the motor out of the bike to rebuild/replace the transmission. About $1000 if you can pull the motor yourself and put it back in; $2000 if you need someone else to do the whole shot.

Either the bike has been down on the shifter side and jacked up the shift fork, or the PO liked banging the shifter down and bent the shift fork.  Either way, I would say the cases need split and hope for the best.  Hopefully the shift selector is just out of place and the pin has come loose (If its the same as a honda CR 250).......

Yeah it could be as easy as resetting something. I know when I rebuilt my yz motor it kept not wanting to shift after I'd bolt the cases together. I just had to try opening it and rebolting it a few times and it finally lined up. If 2nd gear was already shot, I'd say you might be looking at replacing the transmission just to be safe. The only way I'd consider it is if you either want a project, which it doesn't sound like, or if you want to buy the bike and hope you can find a 2nd motor for less than $1000 and just stuff the whole motor in and hope it actually runs well.
