I have an 05 gs500f completely stock. When i pull the choke on, it has no affect on the engine/RPMs. Mechanically it is functioning properly though. Any ideas what might cause this issue?

Cable is broken or not installed correctly? When you move the arm, you can watch the carb and see if the choke is actually functioning. It should slide a bar at the front of the carb side to side. Two brass colored plungers, one on each carb will move in and out of the carb body.

Yes, the choke is moving side to side and functioning properly but it doesn't have any affect on the engine/RPMs. In the past, while the engine was cold and i would choke it, the RPMs would jump to about 4000 RPM but now nothing.

Have you been riding the bike, or has it been sitting? Does it rev normally with the throttle? The choke or enrichener should only act to let more gas into the carb and richen the fuel mixture, possibly the orifices are clogged with old fuel?

I'm wondering if I have the same issue with my choke.  I think I'm going to take the choke apart and spray some carb cleaner down where the choke plugs go.  Is this a bad idea?  Any better way to clean the choke circuit?

Should be fine as long as you remove any rubber or plastic bits that could get caught in the crossfire. I add a little in tank cleaner ( Seafoam) about every 3rd fill up. have had no carb issues since.

Yes i was riding it almost daily until about a month ago when i decided to take the carb apart and give it a good cleaning. I should've left it alone but it was hesitating a little on take off so decided to clean it. and now, the thing doesn't want to rev properly and the choke now has no affect on engine rpms. When i say it doesn't want to rev properly, i mean it seems slow to rev and sputters around 5k and while riding, it has no power. I've checked the diaphrams, checked for vacuum leak, check fuel flow through petcock, checked float height. What am i missing?

one more thing, the battery is dead so i'm having to jump it off and also i test drove it with the airbox off. How much affect would these two thing have if at all?

tricky

wouldn't running it with the airbox off make it run mega-lean?

:icon_confused: Really? ... I mean really???
1. Your battery is integral to the engine. It is not like a car that runs off the alternator only.
2. Air and fuel + spark = go. Too much or too little air, fuel or spark = no go or go, but bad!!!

The choke on a GS carb just adds a little vacuum to the diaphragm in the top of the carbs to raise the needle up and allow some fuel to pass through the main jet to richen the mixture.  If the choke isn't working and the engine is having trouble revving with everything installed correctly, I'd be looking at clogged main jets as a possible culprit.

Well after it being suggested that it might be a clogged main jet, I took it all back apart and stupid me had put the mid jet into the main jet hole in one of the carbs. Now she runs like a top better than ever. Thanks for all the help fellas.

:woohoo:
