My Best Friends Parents Close Call

I just got an email form my best friends parents this morning, they live in VT. Ive known the kid since were 2 (now almost 26) so his family is like mine. Ill share an expert from the email. Its about as close of a call as they come:

"  About 4 miles on route 104 approaching a slight rise on a straight away an oncoming car probably going 50-60 I'm doing maybe 40-50 is on the double yellow line. I see this and think the driver has to pull back. No, with no rhyme or reason the car is coming right at me at an angle of attack that must have seemed like a kamikaze pilot to some poor sole on a B24. The car is now completely in my lane heading right at me and the Mrs. Don't ask me how because there really wasn't a shoulder, just about 2 feet of really sandy gravelly wintry ice melting mix and then what I would call a drainage swale area that was grassy, muddy, sandy and very uneven that rose up to trees and brush. I felt the impact and it happened so so quick, The car gave me a direct hit on my left crash bar, I felt the car pushing me to the side, my leg brushing the side of the car as it whizzed by. Then it impacted again to the rear. My heart sank.. She had to get hit. It wound up the car completely wiped out the rear foot rest, saddle bag with chrome protection bars. Somehow after basically getting sideswiped, pushed and jolted by an oncoming car somehow, I was still on 2 wheels, the bike was moving at a good clip and I was now on the sandy mix heading for the muddy swale, Somehow, when getting in the swale I rode it for about 400 feet, sliding, twisting, fighting and maybe praying. Finally one last push and she stayed up and we were stopped. I turned around and expected my wife's leg to be gone. Her only complaint was that her foot hurt a little (in a rush she didn't have her boots on only low hiking shoes) , I wonder why. Many wonderful witnesses and people came out to help. 3-4 cars were up on the grass to avoid head on collisions with this lady who one witness says was on a cell phone. The woman behind me had to go into oncoming traffic to avoid getting into a head on collision with incompetent driver that nearly killed us. X-rays revealed no broken bones, a slight contusion. Sitting in the emergency room with her later on "after I rode the bike home mind you" I was just picturing what it could have been, maybe one of us or both of us not there, at least we should have had tremendous bodily damage, road rash a broken pinky maybe. But I am here to tell you that I do not have a scratch and my wife will be fine. The venture stayed with me the whole time, although heavy as a beast, some how that baby did not want to go down, it took a head on hit stayed straight up (not without a fight) and kept me alive."

Sorry for the long read but they were forced off the road by an oncoming car, and still got hit/swiped at high speed. Thats is about as close as you come to punching your ticket. All because some person was on a cell phone supposedly or simply not paying attention. After hearing this i was very shaken up, if they were injured or worse it would be like they were my own parents because they essential were my secondary family my whole life. Stories like this make me want to hang up my helmet forever, just last weekend I had the GS out for the first time saying how good it was to ride after months.........  Be careful everyone, and please watch the road when in your 4-wheeled vehicle. Dont let your friends or family drive distracted either.

Shiny side up all,
Tom
