Still too lean?

Popping quite a bit when I let off the throttle and some at times when riding but not often at all.
But bare in mind, its mostly do from a tight exhaust valve.

But I did think theres a possibility I might need to go with larger mains.

94 running with Cobra F1s slipon & K&N open air filter with 40 pilots and 130 mains.
but it also has an 06 exhaust on it up until the slip-on. (which seems wider in areas then the stock was)

Was looking over http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Upgrades.Rejetting just now for the heck of it and see what others have in.
Seems theres nothing but 140 to 150 mains.

Prior to me swapping jets out, appeared to be totally stock in every part.
Float level is perfectly even with 1 plastic (or whatever material it is) washer on the needle.

Below is a pic of what were not brand new plugs that were mostly black prior to a 70 mile test run over the course of 1 day when I finally got the engine going.

one on the left is in the right cylinders that is within spec (thinking the brown is from the tanks slight surface rust I need to take care of maybe?)
one on the right is the left cylinders that was all black prior and the exhaust valve is tight until the shim arrives in the mail.



Just asking because im buying some parts tomorrow.

and wondering if I should grab a few bigger main jets just incase.
thinking a set of 140s, 145s and 150s.

I'll be buying new plugs as well tomorrow for when I loosen the exhaust valve clearance.
So it will be a more accurate reading when I get all that done.

Yep. Lean. I'd say 140-145 may be a conservative start. Study matrix and threads, use that as a guide. Jetting is a black art. Grab some #4 washers too.

Also, 3 turns out on mixture screw if not already.

Check your electrode gaps too...the black one looks smaller than the brown one.  May just be the angle of the photo.

I agree with bomb.  It really look slike the gap is off compared to each other.  Are they different heat ranges?

Lefty looks like the wrong kinda brown...
I say, re-gap, and do a plug chop at 1/4 1/2 and 1/1 throttle and see where your leanest spot is. Good stuff though, glad she's running right.

Tomb, if you buy your jets locally, get 140's first. By going up 2 sizes, it's possible to know if you went TOO fat or are still lean.

First, I say yeah difference in heat between the two if thats what you meant.
as the left exhaust valve is too tight.
thats why shes sitting until the shim comes that Steezin sent me  :bowdown:  :thumb:

and now that I sit and actually "think"
washers under the needle have nothing to do with the float lvl right...... no idea why I thought it did hahahaha

as for that, I've never touched that area of the carbs past putting new needles in.
So I have no idea what to actually get in regards to a #4 washer.

and the plug gaps.
Might be different.
as I have 3 sets of plugs that are not "garbage" yet that I have used and swapped when I was trying to get this sucker going.

and I plan to buy brand new plugs tomorrow.
probably grabbin 4 since im monkeying with the carbs after I reshim the exhaust valve.

Just going to buy a set of 140, 145, and 150s.
$2.79 a pop isnt a big deal at all for me considering how much I've put into this sucker.
So I'd rather have everything all at once then one set to try out and end up maybe needing another size.

and good reminder on the jets.
I scrolled down the page and seen the one thing Ive been meaning to replace.
Carb bowl screws qty 8 for $8.93 (stainless steel allen head screws)

will be adding that to my list for tomorrows purchases.

I would skip the 150's - only because I don't recall anybody using them. But I haven't looked at the wiki for a while either.

I believe www.denniskirk.com has jets as well and they usually arrive 2 or 3 days after you order.

i'll check how long it took the other site to get them to me and compare.
as I ordered my 40 pilots from the site I linked

or actually.
I'll call the local salvage yard to see if they have any in stock tomorrow.
as I will be going through them to order new header gaskets and bolts. (to save on shipping cost)

I'd order all the jets you listed.  You never know what your bike will take.  You can always sell the extras back to the GS Community, cause one of us will need them.  They should sell fast.

kk salvage yard only had 145 jets.

put them in along with 1 #3 washer on the needle.

still some popping on decel but yet to check the brand new plugs after todays ride.

will check the plugs tomorrow tho.

but still consider going with 150 mains?
or play with the mixture screws more (3 out atm)

Well, the mixture screw, needles, and mains all control different areas of the throttle range. Do a wot run and check the plugs again.

How exactly do you go about doing this safely?

The absolute safest? On a race track or a dragstrip.  But it only needs to be open throttle - not max speed, so even 3rd gear up a slight hill will do. As long as you burn off any excess junk from the plugs and have a nice little pull off you can coast to after pulling the clutch in and hitting the kill switch.
