Does the stator just go bad over time?

I have a 95 with 40k and noticed that the battery is not charging.

I read numerous charging system/goats threads and performed the following tests.

1. rev bike to 5k and test battery at terminals. Reads below 13 volts
2. check voltage at 3 stator plugs on left side of bike. I get no reading on the multimeter.

Do I need a special multimeter for #2?

Since I didn't get a reading, I thought I might have goats and opened the case. Gladly, the magnets look fine (a little peeling at the edge on one magnet) & so does the stator. Does the stator just go bad sometimes? I also need to lift the tank & check the entire stator wiring to the 3 plugs. Otherwise, I'm baffled.

At the battery you are reading DC voltage.
Be sure the meter is set for AC voltage when reading the stator terminals.
Most likely a shorted cell in the battery is pulling things down. How old is the battery and what type?
Second possibility could be the voltage regulator going bad. More likely the voltage regulator going bad than the stator.

Stator can die from natural causes in 95K, if its black and crusty looking in any spot its prolly dead. It should be no darker than caramel color, any darker, its starting to go. Darker it is, its got 1 foot in the grave.

Thought it might be the battery, so I bought a new one and  it drained on a 80 mile ride.

Yeah was reading AC at the stator terminals & get nothing. Put the multimeter in my house outlets and it read 120 correctly.

What is its resistance between coils. That doesn't looks too bad, I've seen worse that worked fine.
BTW dying on an 80 mile ride = the stator is semi working. It will die in 15 mins on a full charge if nothing is getting into the battery.

Two Questions:

1. Will a 2007 Stator work with a 95? I only see that the end plug is different which is not problem to splice wires.
2. Will a 2007 rectifier work with a 95?

Rectifier === same
Stator:  older bikes 3 barrel connectors with an adapter from that to the 3 pin plastic connector buried in the wiring harness. If using a 2007 stator, bypass that adapter cable and connect directly to the rectifier. No need to splice wires or change any connectors. All rectifiers have a 3 pin plastic connector.

Unfortunately, 2007 stator plug wire was too short to reach the rectifier on right side of bike. Just spliced & connected to 3 barrel connector.

All good...just replaced the stator.

In comparison, my stator looked dark/burnt and cracked.
