can the mid main be put in place of the main, say, hypothetically, by accident...as in will it fit?

yes you can stuff it up .They have same thread but a smaller outside diameter and a lot lower numbering .Easy way to rember is main jet below the needle

haha....thats why my bike did not want to get the rpm's above 6000....its awesome now.
