Awe come on guys, didn't you hear the poor man? He can't even afford 56kbs:

I wish I could help out.

If it comes to it, I'd be willing to throw down so long as other people do.  It probably would not help much if only a couple people sent 10 bucks ;)

No I don't need money.  Right now I am not going to persue anything till after new year.

Before I call out to members I am gonna try a couple things myself.  I have an A+ cert and will probably use the "down" time to study to get a MCP cert maybe just as a backup.  I have something in the wings -actually quite a few things.  If they all fall through then in a couple months I may be calling out to members.

FYI I refuse to go on unemployment.  I'll shovel shaZam! before I go on the public dole.

Like you, i cant stand not earning my cash, but unemployment is part of the taxes you pay. you dont get it indefinitly, nor in large amounts. and if you have no taxed employment history, you dont get any. there are some programs out there that work in different ways, but Un employment isnt soley "Public Dole", its more like insurence, but not very good.you still get taxed on it and have to claim it at end of year. there are some other rules too.  But yeah, my pride is alittle too thick to even locate the office in phonebook. i have done 3 months of daily labor 6 days a week to make sure i kept a roof over head. and yea, i shoveled shaZam! too.

Wrong, oh mighty admin.  Get down there tomorrow and apply.  This isn't wellfare, it's called "insurance" remember? Totally different concept. Think about it. You and your former employer have been planning for this very day. Look at your old pay stubs.

Also, it makes no difference if you got a little severance. If you're out the door, then you can sign up now (in states I'm familiar with).

Getting kicked out is fairly common, you know.  What in the hell kind of company would have let you hang around for 14 years anyway? The morons!

I've been bought, sold and merged out of numerous jobs over the years.  I can't think of one situation where I didn't end up happy as shaZam! that I didn't work there anymore.

Get your MCE and move someplace warm if nothing happens where your at.

I'm not too clear on the whole unemployment thing, but don't you get only a certain amount before you get cut off for good?  Something like 26 weeks state + 13 federal and that's it. :dunno: I came really close to putting myself in for unemployment a couple of times, but luckily my money lasted so I wouldn't have to sacrifice my pride.  God, when I was a college student, I used hate standing in line at the supermarket, with my cart full of spaghetti and sauce, looking at some ghetto-living couple with new sneakers and leather jackets paying for their stuff with food stamps.  :guns:

Heh, I forgot the whole point of my post!  If you only get a limited amount of unemployment, it might pay to sit down and think when you may really need to call upon it.  Hopefully the job market isn't that crappy, and you won't have to sit down and balance pride with cash reserves and how much unemployment is left.

John, unemployment insurance is payed by the company that you worked for.  They pay for the first year, so it is not like you would be getting a free hand for accepting unemployment.  Since you were laid off, you would be eligible for it.  Other benefits, such as food stamps and medicaid are payed by the tax payers.  When I was on unemployment it did take almost 1 month for my unemployment to start.  Trust me it will help pay the bills (BARELY) but it is something that was necessary, I thought I would be able to find another computer job quickly and was unemployed from the IT industry for almost a 1 1/2 before I was able to find work again.  I just got a job that I started today having to take 1/2 the pay I used to make.  So hang in there and don't let pride keep you from living.

I don't know what it's like in the US, but up here unemployment insurance will actually cover you while you go to school to take a course in some instances. I'm not talking a 4 year degree or anything obviously...might be worth looking into as well though.

I have unemployment deducted from every pay, and I assume it's the same way there, so don't feel bad about going on it for a bit...you paid into it after all. That's the whole reason it exists. The people who suck are the ones who collect unemployment while working under the counter at the same time.  :guns:  :guns:

Just remember, it's not money for nothing....you've paid for it. Same thing as using your car insurance really. Nobody WANTS to have to use it, but it can save your ass when you need it.

You likely won't need it for long anyway, so don't sweat it. Go apply as soon as you can, and best of luck in your search in the meantime.

I had an intern working for me a few years back.  He was brought in by our CEO as a favor for someone.  Charles was from France and had recently graduated from university.  (Very smart fellow and still a good friend)

One day, his mom called from France to tell him that the government was trying to track him down so they could start sending him his unemployment checks!  "But wait, you weren't working, you were going to school?"  Yes, in France, you could collect up to 2 years of unemployment following graduation. You didn't even have to be in the country to get it!

thats very respectable.  you sound like me (i hate handouts. i have to make it on my own). and i don't know but i think everyone on this board or at least almost everyone would like to make on thier own if in the same situation. i would like nothing more than to see you make it on your own.  best of luck :thumb:

I really did shovel shaZam! for work many many years ago :o

I would rather earn $400 doing a lousy job than $500 on unemployment.  I just feel that way.  BUT I will at least go to the unemployment office and get some pamphlets because if they do help pay for retraining MAYBE I would condiser using them to help pay for MCP cert classes.  I doubt this is gonna happen but its worth the ride over I guess.

I have to work or I will shrivel up and die.  AFter 3 or 4 days on vacation I go stir crazy!

Nothing Public about it John. Your employer paid into it as a part of your (and everyone else's in the company) compensation for the past 14 years. That all went into a pool that would give you partial compensation in just such a circumstance as this.

Essentially, you are cutting your former employer a huge break by not filing. They pay a percentage of your monthly take for 26+ weeks. It's not big bucks, but it may cover your mortgage or a group of other bills. I thought that I would be too proud to file until I realized that 1. they owed it to me, and 2. I needed to feed my kids and keep a roof over their heads until I found work again.

I'm not too proud for that.

Yes everyone is pretty much on the nose about un employment...
The govt is pissing away 90 billion to save 5 billion on oil... Makes you want to give them every penny you got doesn't it.
It is insurance, and to be viewed exactly as such.... You driving along the road and someone runs a stop sign and clobbers you with a truck called lay off... Happens to people on an average evry 3-4 years. Usually they get up, look at the damage, and dust themselves off and say... ok Its not bad... and drive off. Every 3-4th time... they dont get up, and the car is not driveable... and the paramedics have to help them, and they cant drive their car, so the get theirs fixed under insurance, and cant work a few weeks, and insurance covers that... So when the laid off truck hits you and you dont walk away from it onto another job... you call unemployment. Last year I collected in 3 stretches ~15 weeks. But I have paid into the system for 10 years more or less. They have a 2 week wait. hence your situation of you might find a job quickly... is built into it. You apply and for 2 weeks they dont pay you... If you got nothing at that point, then they start sending you forms to fill etc saying you are looking for positions here and here and here... and they send you $$$. Yes its pathetic, you cant live on it, and you spend 8+ hrs a day looking for a job etc etc... but it will keep food on the table (barely) and part of your roof on your head... You still use up your savings... but slower, you cant buy anything you dont need, go anywhere other than what you have to, but you wont freeze to death, starve to death, or end up living under a bridge in a cardboard box. That is all it will do for you. Insurance... not way of life, or big bucks to run around and buy everything you see.
Cool.
