So i was cruising tonight to my friends house and kept feeling the bike sorta surge, then stop. Came to a residential area, 35mph, 2nd gear and it kept feeling strange, like it was cutting out. Turns out the rotor bolt backed off. pulled up to a stop sign and heard it grinding inside the case. have not pulled it down yet but fearing the worst. magnetic shrapnel can wreak havoc on the steel crank and rods :icon_sad: Pulling it down tomorrow after work and will take pics of the carnage. Wish me the best, hopefully i caught it before it got really bad.

Ouch.  Good luck man.  Anything you could have done to prevent this?

steezin_and_wheezin

you lost yer front sprocket mid ride?? that's harsh! photos of the carnage for sure!!
if yer binders ain't squeakin, you ain't tweakin!

I think he is talking about the starter rotor, not the sprocket.

steezin_and_wheezin

ahh i see.. you sure the bolt backed out? smells like goats in here? let us know what it looks like when you get her open!

Sounds like he's talking about the ignition rotor on the right end of the crank?

i wish it was just that. I'm speaking of the rotor/generator. I'm pretty sure the bolt backed out because the starter just freewheels now, meaning it slid down the crank. Pics up this evening when I get home

I'm hoping I caught it in time, that the rotor will still be intact, self inflicted goats would suck severely. That would mean splitting cases again to remove magnetic particles from the engine. Hopefully a re install with some blue loctite does the job.

steezin_and_wheezin

Was going to ask about that! I'm just getting ready to do all my loctite fixes on the DRZ.

I have a good bottom end from a 89 with ~2500 miles. If need be i would be willing to let it go cheap to help ya out. keep us posted

I'm thinking the bottom end should be ok. I just put it together not 800 or so miles ago. If it ate the stator I have a spare, just might need a rotor for it.

phewwwww.... what a relief. Bolt was just slightly loose. no damage at all! (i know, i have the starting symptoms of goats... but it looked that way when a put it together) Loctite and tighten it down and its good to go  :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen: pics as requested, and even a short clip!

Speaking from personal experience, pul your front sprocket and grease the splines. Or perhaps find that the sprocket is already badly worn at the splines, replace it, and grease the new one. The rust pattern on it is somewhat diagnostic of a mode called "fretting wear" IIRC.

Here's the thread where I found out about it (thanks to Sledge.)
