I left my phone sitting on top of my tank bag and rode away.  Got about 4-5 blocks and sat through two red lights before it fell off and got run over!

I've lost two phones out of the same tank bag.  It's not enough to just stick it in the top map pocket.  You've got to make sure that the velcro which closes the pocket is secured. 

First was a brand new $450+ digital Star-Tac with no insurance on it.  Lost it coming down a highway onramp at about 2:00 AM.  No trace of it when I was finally able to get turned around and backtrack.

You'd think that expensive lesson would have been enough, but no.  A few years later my $500 Handspring Treo 300 (one of, if not THE, first real smartphones.) was also fell outta the pocket on the highway.  Luckily it was day time, light traffic, I knew exactly where it came out at, and I was able to immediately pull off and come back on the frontage road.  Found it right away, with only the flip up lid that covered the screen missing.  That lid also contained the speaker, so I had to use a earbud for a few days, but it was fully functional and barely scratched other than that.  Pretty impressive for taking a 75 mph tumble down the road.  I'd at least learned the lesson about owning a ridiculously expensive phone without insurance.  Sprint had a new one to me within a few days.

You should get an otterbox for your phone.

My HTC EVO 4G survived a motorcycle crash and being run over 3-4 times in the middle of an intersection thanks to my otterbox.

Lost my Nokia once (pre smart phones) in a rainstorm from Mansfield to Cincinnati.  Never did find it.  That was a $150 mistake I'll never do again.

Agreed.  Just don't go crazy with your loads.  Which reminds me, I really need to start hunting for a tank bag..

In india I used to carry a coffee table in the back of the bike while my dad rode the bike ... easy.
Other things I have carried as passenger or was rider as someone else played the carrying role - an LPG cylinder (about 2 X the size of apropane tank), a cement water tank - about the same size but square, a 17" TV, an 8 ft pole and a 30 meter chain (surveying junk), a pair of motorcycle tires - and this was a solo effort and its easy you wear them like a spare tire and more.

Thankfully, I have never carried a whole family on one ... I was in the US by then, and kiddo is yet to get on the bike and it move ... he's still terrified and I think he's terrified of going deaf on it even though it has the stock exhaust, cos he'd sit on it and instead of holding me, will be putting his fingers in his ears.

I wasn't going crazy with the load it was a simple collapsible cooler. The dollar tree bungies didn't hold it down firm and the lunch box squirted out and got caught in the back! I've never had that problem with my Auto Zone bungies.

I usually go down a size on the cheap ones, since they aren't nearly as tightly wound as the more expensive ones.

No, sorry!  It is a work phone, and they replaced it for me.  IT guy asked if I wanted it for a souvenir.  Guess I should have kept it, but it was thrown away.

Alpinestars tech aero tank bag is what I've got for my day to day use. I love that thing. Its holds very well and hasn't shown any signs of wear in the 10 months and 7000mi I've had it.
