Mechanical to electronic tacho conversion.

Those of you playing at home may remember that I swapped my engine a few months ago.

Long story short I removed the 1995 motor and replaced it with one from a 2008 bike.  To simplify the conversion I used the pulse sender, CDI box and carbs from the 1995 engine, and ignored the gear position indicator.  This just left me with no tacho, as there's no gear drive on the later engines.

I would like to run the later model gauge to keep it looking stock.  I'm wondering where the stock electronic tacho takes it's drive from.  If it's from a coil wire, then I should be able to splice it in, although if it runs off the pulse sender or CDI unit then I may have to look at other options.

So I don't miss the cable vibrating loose, or the constant oil leak from the top of the engine, but I would kind of like to have a tacho.

I just did the same engine and gauge swap.  Followed some instructions posted elsewhere on this forum.

For the tach there were 3 wires.  Red/black, Black/white, Orange

- Red/black splices into right side ignition coil Yellow/white wire
- Orange taps into key ON power.  Find the other orange wire inside the gauge cluster and tap into it there
- Black/white is ground. Again, you'll find similar wires inside the cluster.

Used 3M Scotchlok red for tapping into wiring.

Curious why you didn't swap the gear position sensor.  I swapped it off the older motor and everything works as it should.

Thanks, that gives me something to work with.  I'll get a second hand electronic tacho and go from there.

I didn't use the gear position sensor because the 1995 model motor that came out of my bike didn't have one, just the sender for the neutral light.

Gear position sensor is compatible. No need to change it. The newer one has 2 added wires for 1st and 2nd gear. The newer CDI uses it to adjust engine timing.
