Battery Tray

Decided while I still have the tank off to pull the  battery tray and hit it with some prep spray and rustolium.  I took out the bolts holding it in, 2 bottom and 4 on the side.  Last one is the screw that you have to access from under the rear fender.  That screw is very corroded and I can't get it to budge.  Is it really needed or can I try to cut it off and drill it out from the top side?

My Haynes manual says nothing about the sixth screw. Sure.

It just holds the rear fender up against the battery box.  I'd say don't worry too much about that bolt, its going to be a standard size, most likely M6x1.0 and maybe 12mm long at most.

If the rear fender moves too much without that bolt in place you can just replace it with something, maybe stainless to resist the elements.  If you leave it out it'll probably be fine... but that may just be me.

Its a phillips head screw which is the big problem.  It looks like it could have a socket on it but mine won't hold, I'm not sure its just not coming apart anyways.  I may have to try and drill it out.  Stainless would work, not exactly under much stress there.

Got it out, rounded pretty bad.  Used a good dose of pb blaster and found my grip tight sockets.  Now to clean it up and paint it with some rustoleum.

I love pb blaster. That stuff is awesome.

Pics of how the painting goes? I love little projects like this and have thought numerous times about doing my battery box as well.
