Hi all,

I'm priming my bike frame which consists of some bare metal and some existing paint. Which primer would I need to use?

WELP, it depends on what you're loading, .45 acp is going to be large pistol primers, and they say a 230gr slug and 9.8gr of blue dot is is pretty good target load...

wait, wrong "primers"  :icon_mrgreen:

If you have sanded down to bare metal, you're going to need a self etching primer. Regular primers may not be tough enough on bare metal in this application.
The best thing to do is probably to take the whole frame down to metal if you really have a lot already showing.
I swear by rustoleum products, and have had great experience.

Tombstone likes filler primer, like spray on shellac. he's got a line on the stuff, and will probably be able to send you a link.

actually I used regular Duplicolor white primer. (white to bring out the red top color better since they didnt have any pink that I read brings out the color even better)

but I used it on the frame as well.

which was stripped with Aircraft stripper (scraped off with a putty knife) as much as possible and wet sanded as much as possible.

I "Should" have used a Filler Primer.

Especially on my tank that if you look closely, you can see imperfections from the metal, not the paint work.

But I didnt really have any problems with it on the frame.

So just pick a brand with a good rep, but I vote a filler primer to fill in Any small imperfections you might not notice.

or go the route I should have went and have it powdercoated. haha

(edit)
if you're painting your frame an actual Color and not white or black, look up what color primer will bring out the most in the top color.

and if you're going with an Enamel as the top coat.
Read up all you can about it.
Enamels arent very good with a clear coat until its had Months to cure.
Initially cleared mine after black enamel (before I read not to) and it turned out lookin worse then it did without a clear.
So I redid the visuals of my frame with the same Duplicolor black enamel and no clear and it looks way better.

Better, conical wadcutter, those things are like .08/pc
hahaha
yes I do, I used to have a mitchells mausers match 1911, but it was heavy and stupid with its full length guide rod,
and floating feed ramp. So I traded it for an old llama commander model, and honestly, even though they get a horrible rep,
its the best pistol I own, and I've fired thousands of rounds without more than a couple stove pipes. I wouldn't trade it back, despite the disparate values.

Haha a Llama...wow. I didn't know any of them made it this far...do they still make guns??

The .45 is a great round. I've got a S&W .40 "Sigma" that I really like. It's expensive to shoot though, even just bargain Fedaral FMJs are about 28 cents a piece. I really want to get a Ruger 10-22.
