Opinions on a possible bike purchase please

I have an opportunity to buy a 1989 FZ600, in questionable condition, for dirt cheap - maybe $200-$300.  The woman selling it says it ran last year but didn't start this year.  It has been laid down and has replacement fairings that aren't installed and don't match the original yellow color. I don't know the mileage, tire condition, or anything else at this point.

I noticed there's one similar selling on eBay, expiring tomorrow, currently at about $150.

Any opinions on whether this would be more trouble and expense than it's worth, or if it would be a good bike to have?

TIA

Unless you're really strapped for cash 200 bucks doesn't sound like a big gamble.  Make sure nothing looks too damaged to make it roadworthy (bent forks, frame, dent rims, cracked cases, etc).  So long as it will start, you can probably make a it a decent fighter for work commutes or city riding.  Give it the "krylon touch" and you're set :)

You can probably get away with investing in tires (might not need them), battery, new gas, and time for a carb clean to get it running on the street.  The chain probably needs a clean and lube.

Take a look and if you think it has potential, then 200 isn't bad.  If its too wrecked or just plain abused, I say pass

I would bet the replacement fairings, if in decent condition, could be sold for at least $200 if not more.  I would go for it, maybe make it a winter project!

Pffftt.  My humble opinion?  Fahgedaboudit!!  It may turn into a bottomless money-sucking frustration pit...there's just no way to tell.  As it is now, it's woth nothing.

Are you looking to buy this bike as a street bike, or a track bike?
What kind of title does it have, if it has a title?  If the title is not in this woman's name that you are dealing with, that could be a problem.  If it has a salvage title, that could be a problem.  You might want to call a few BMV's in your area and ask how you can register a motorcycle that has a salvage title.  Call more than one office so that you can compare advice because these people have their heads up their arses many times and you will get a different story from every person you talk to.
If you are looking for a track-only bike a salvage or no title may not be a problem.  Be sure to get a bill of sale.  You might be able to get some police office or other agency to do a VIN search to see if it is stolen.
