Short answer is yes. You might want to upgrade to an R6 or a Katana shock though as they are a straight swap an much much better. Search the forum for details
I am not interested in anything you have to say
Don't bother talking to me, I will not answer you

I have found the GS rear shock fine for my weight. Adjusting it one notch firmer make it better for rougher mountain highways.
I use newer shocks on all my bikes. just being newer it works better than a 20 year old shock.
Plenty of squids crash their new GS500's that good, like new rear shocks are easy to get.

You gotta love the squids that crash their new GS500! It makes for a nearly unlimited supply of new, inexpensive replacement parts. That's how I get brake calipers for $15-$25.
