Why would the seat sit like this?
Before I drive an hour to see this bike I want to know if this is a known common issue with gs500 seats or is this a sign of abuse?

The seat is not latched down in the seat lock.

Either the latch is broken or the guy just doesn't know how to put the seat back on properly.  When I bought my bike the seat was not flush in the front because the PO put in a battery that was too tall.   That does not look to be the case here.

Being what looks like a bike swap meet, probably left the seat lose to show the bike to prospective buyers and not have to use the key to constantly remove the seat.

Thanks! I'm not at all familiar with motorcycles so being from a car background this struck me as a warning flag.

Keeping in mind I'm mostly familiar with the fully faired models... but, I do not see the key lock for the seat latch.  Fully faired models supply that on the side of the left tail plastics.  Where is that supposed to be located for this model?

Its there. Just below the plastics and an inch behind the passenger peg mount.
That's where it is on the 89-00 models - it wasn't in the tail plastic.

Great, thanks. I didn't want to throw up any red flags without actually knowing much about it  .. I also didn't want it to go unmentioned just in case...

I want to throw this out there as well:

My seat looks the same way. I have a 90 E model, and the seat is fully latched but the back rides up a bit, exactly like the picture. I bought the bike from my boss, he mentioned this...he had the seat off the bike, upside down in the sun for a long period of time, we are pretty sure the plastic underbody just warped a bit.

Looks EXACTLY like how my seat sits, so that could be the case as well.
