carb help needed

1999 gs500e

rejetted to 40/125 plus 2 washers

bike was running fine but a tad rich and sluggish for the recent hot weather.

i decided to go down to one washer. opened up the top cap took one washer out paid attention that little o ring is not lossed. put back together bike will
idle but give it gas and it dies

so i went back and put the washers i took out back and same story. idles but i touch the throttle and it dies.

did i somehow put the washer on wrong? they go on top of the plastic bit right? or is it under it?

ok so i took all the washers out and still same... idles bit cant give gas

this is funny. i did not touch any thing else just opened the cap and changed washers.

I don't have a ton of experience in the carb/fuel delivery area but I'll run down a few things I can think of just as a little sanity check for you.

• Did you disconnect any fuel lines during tank removal?  Are they reconnected in the proper fashion?  Check connections/routes at tank/petcock/carb.
• Did you disconnect the vacuum line?  Is it reconnected properly?
• Did you seat the slide diaphragm in its groove correctly?  Is it pinched, kinked?
• Double/triple check the Vacuum O-Rings?
• Check the vacuum port caps?

I dunno, that's all I can think of.  I haven't done a straight "caps off" needle shim, but I read about it and it seemed pretty straight forward.  I'll follow this thread just in case I need to do this in the future.

i had put the washer above intead of putting it under. wrong order...

Just so I follow correctly, what's your full order?  Going from bottom to top is it metal washer, plastic washer, e-clip, spring seat?

yes mine same... although i am missing an e-clip from one. is that a big deal?

I think that an e-clip is crucial, otherwise the diaphragm can't lift the needle up.  I'd need someone to back me up on that, but I think that without an e-clip the needle will always be partially obstructing the emulsion tube and that cylinder won't get the fuel/air mixture that it should be.

How is the needle supported if you have no e-clip?  It will stop moving through the diaphragm when it hits the top of the emulsion tube, but how would it rise when the diaphragm rises?  The e-clip sitting on the needle seat is what holds the needle with the diaphragm.  It might start and idle fine like this, but would be very inconsistent with the fuel mixture when given throttle.

You can order an e-clip through a dealer site for cheap.  Suzuki Part Number 13394-10010.  If you weren't in Canada I would just US mail one to you.

okay maybe its not the e-clip, okay there is 3 pieces right... the one that sits on the top. its plastic.. the one at the bottom its plastic and that metal piece its like mini washer buy it does not go all the way around , there is a break in it...

The plastic piece on top is the spring seat. The spring sits on it.

Yes, the washer with a piece missing, that you are missing, is the e-clip.


The one below that is the jet needle ring.

Go to an online parts supplier and bring up the parts fiche for your year and the system you are looking at, and you can see what things are called - I don't hold all that in my head all the time.

What we can't understand is how the thing could not be running atrociously on that side, given that the e-clip is what allows the needle to be pulled up with the slide.

A half-decent, or at most 3/4 decent hardware store should have e-clips - bring in the needle and find one to fit it. Or an auto parts store. Or go pay too much at the dealer - in any case, it's a big deal, becase without it those other two parts are free to move around without moving the needle, which is what they are supposed to do...

Yeah...I'm pretty baffled how it is running ok without that.  Maybe it's running on one cylinder?

hmmm i will have another look.. maybe i just didnt notice it. nut 2 days ago i opened the carbs to go down to one washer from two and i did not notice..
i will post once i take it out again
