Screething sound when idling in gear

Hi guys,
my 2004 gs500f has the following problem:
You can hear a screeching sound when idling in gear. If I accelerate even the tiniest bit the sound will go away and the bike sounds 100% healthy.
If I hold down the clutch: the sound becomes very faint but you can still hear the screeching slightly.
If I put to bike in neutral while it's still going fast: the sound disappears entirely. So it only happens when idling in gear.

I'm worried that my gearbox might be coming apart. The sound is like metal on metal grinding or something. I think I can actually feel a slight vibration along with "the sound".

Can you give me some advice? What could it be? I'm going to take Susie to mechanic but I want to hear some suggestions.

Thanks a bunch!

How fresh is your oil?
Is your clutch cable adjusted right?
Have you done any recent work in tthe drive area of the bike?
Any 'inidents' happen with the bike? (drops, bad gear shifts, burnouts)

Take a video of it. Screeching could mean many things to many people.

Ride the bike around for 15 minutes to get it warmed up, then put it on the centerstand in neutral and video.

Hi guys,

thank you for the replies. I took Susie to the mechanic today: the chains was loose. The guy made it tight again and now the sound is gone. The bad news is that the guys said I need a new chain pronto. He said the pinions (I think that's what they're called) are OK so I just need a new chain.

Can anyone recommend a good, cheap chains for my GS?

Thanks a bunch!

I was going to say check your chain, and adjust your clutch.

I'm confused, how does a chain screech at idle? :dunno_black:

He wasn't really referring to idle.  I assume he meant with the throttle closed while moving in gear.  In other words, engine braking.
