2004 GS500F R&G crash protectors

Hi all,

I'm having some difficulty in fitting the R&G crash protectors to my 04 GS.

I can undo the main engine nut, but the actual bolt will not shift!

Looking at pics for the engine frame bolt, it appears there is just 1 bit of thread an inch or so long at the nut end- so technically the bolt should just come out once the nut is off.

But the beggar just won't budge. Even tried turning the bolt to ease it out, but it's stuck fast- even snapped a heavy duty torque wrench adapter. Even hit it -hard- with an iron mallet.

Any ideas how I can get this sod to budge?

The weight of the engine is pulling down on the bolt. Get a jack and a board to slight lift the engine enough to ease the pressure on the bolt and then slide it out

I'l give it a go, but from what I've read of other peoples experiences it should come out easily.

Should be easy. Should easily turn with a wrench.

Sounds like the spacers are corroded to the bolt or corrosion where the bolt goes through the engine.

Penetrating oil? Maybe a torch or heat?

Try whacking the nut end of it and see if that helps drive it out.

Not mine, pics posted here some years ago.  I tried to remove my front engine bolts a couple years back to remove some rusty case guards and the top front was really stuck, corroded in place.  After some soaking with Liquid Wrench and a couple other things I forget what they were I still had to drive it all the way out with another bolt and a BFH.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Unfortunately no real way to get the oil to travel horizontally to the center- could maybe stick it on the side stand though.

Nut end has been whacked quite a bit, without being shy about it!

Those pics have me concerned now. I'm putting it up on a jack this afternoon and will let you know how I get on.

Try with the engine HOT. That could soften up some of the crud. It is in there tight, so I would not worry about it falling out.
Anyway, there are 4 bolts holding the engine. If one is missing, it will not fall out.

I'm not concerned about it falling out, R&G provide a longer replacement bolt- so the original HAS to come out. They say to tap it out with the new bolt, but there is no way on earth that'll happen at the moment.

Thankfully the underside doesn't look as corroded as the photos above, but it has definitely bonded.  :icon_sad:

I was only trying to assure you that if the bolt came loose while riding, it would not make the engine fall out, in case you were concerned.

I have G&G sliders on all my bikes.

Clean it good. Get rust dissolver. Then penetrating oil like PB Blaster or Seafoam Deep Creep.
Tap it a lot from both ends and in the middle.
Freeze-Off could cool a hot bolt breaking it free from a hot engine.
Put a wrench on it and tap the end of the wrench handle - like impact wrench style. That may break it free.
