IBC Root Beer

Trivia Question:  I noticed somewhere along the line that both IBC and A&W root beer have been in production since 1919.  Any guesses why?

OK, I'll spill the beans.

From the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia:

The 18th Amendment to the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES, ratified in 1919, prohibited the "manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors" and their importation and exportation.

In other words, the PROHIBITION era began in 1919.  That would explain why IBC (International Brewing Company) and others like A&W switched to producing root beer and other non-alcoholic beverages.

More from Grolier's: The era of Prohibition ended in 1933 when the 18th Amendment was repealed by the 21ST AMENDMENT.

has anyone ever had samuel smith (NOT sam adams) beer? i jsut heard about it and it's supposed to be excellent.

Cal Price

I've had Samuel Smiths bitter, like all bitters, I like it but it don't like me much.

Looking back up the thread, PROHIBITION, wow aint laws amazing things? history is littered with well intended disasters, like Bayer inventing herion to cure opium addiction (well it did that all right!) and prohibition, there are rumblings in Europe about limiting the power of bikes, that could go the same way.

In Cricket the testicular guard, or Box, was introduced in 1874. The helmet was introduced in 1974. Is there a message??

Well, I don't see how I couldn't contribute to this thread...

Dos Equis when I have the money...

Zigen Bock or MGD when I'm feeling less frugal...

and Lone Star is the stand by b/c I'm broke as a joke most of the time... Mmm...

This was me and the roomates move in weekend collection... (at least the ones we were sober enough to remember to put in the jar...)

Believe me... Lone Star and High Life (roomate's fav) dominate the scene now...

I don't believe in beer.... usually If it's below 30proof, I don't bother....

But if you must know, when I do drink beer I'll get a coors light.

Other than that my favorites are:

Hpnotiq (expensive, smooth as silk, but sneaks up on you)
Jeger (best thing in the world)
White Russian (with grey goose)
and
Malibu with a mixer.

I wondered why this was OT and not in odds and ends, its probably because this thread is OLDER than the o&e forum
