04 gs500f project, not firing.

I bought this bike, and the po said that his p.o. got rid of it after getting it back after it was stolen. recovered, the wiring harness was cut. and he bought a new one. except after I got it, and I tried installing the new one, not everything was the same. and im not sure what is missing. i tried adding in the missing connectors. now I can only get it to rotate, with nothing sounding bad, rotates free, even after sitting for a year or more. but the one connector I had to add in would be the start stop buttons, and the lights. which still do not work. I live in the us, but when I decode my vin it shows its a uk fk4 bike, and it matches whats in the book, and I mapped out my wiring harness. but still no spark.








it still wont turn over with the button on the right side handle. and turning the key doesnt do anything. Im looking at trying to get it to fire. I did check my oil, it was very good level with the parts inside looking good. I added a little marvel to the tops of my cylinders to help free it. my gear shifter was sticking but now works amazing since i took the whole chain cover plate off, and found a spider and other trash sitting in there. I have a hardcover haynes manual. but its not really doing any good. with a good battery i can get the starter to work. but nothing else. Im not sure if im missing anything, or if anything is bad. I do know I have two relays, The ignition control box, and another small box. plus I have the starter relay. Im missing my gauges and all of my front and side flaring. any help would be appreciated.

There are a few safety switches that if are not closed, will not allow the starter to engage.

The ones I can think of are the kickstand switch, the neutral switch and the clutch switch.

To test them and make sure they work, I would take a meter to both side of the switch for the kickstand and clutch switch and read them in both positions, opened and closed. The neutral switch can be verified simply by putting the bike in neutral and seeing if the green neutral light comes on by the clocks.

A used harness shouldn't cost a lot. I would just get another one that isn't cut or spliced and keep all of the guessing out of it

BTW, you didn't say where you are located but you said the VIN shows it being a UK 04? So I assume that you are in the UK?

I'm in the us. Alabama to be precise. And the bike does turn over now. And didn't do that before the hackjob of the new wiring harness. The actual connector for the turn signals and the other throttle buttons had to be spliced on. I did map them. So I figured they would be good. However I have a few connectors that don't ha e homes. I am missing my gauge cluster. And the headlight and turn signals in the front. My back lights do not come on whe. The bike has juice and is in the on position, and in neutral. The vin says Spain. And the color of the wirings and direction is for the UK fk4 wiring diagram.

All of these were manufactured in Spain so disregard that. I have a complete and uncut harness here off an 05 if you're ever interested.

Your tail lights may just have bad bulbs, again, use your meter to verify voltage with the key on and then with brakes depressed.

Yeah I do need to check the bulbs. However how much for the wiring harness. Could you located ans confirm certain connectors. Because lines an 04 but the wiring harness I have has different style connectors same color wires.though

Idk. $30 shipped. I'm in GA so it won't cost much to ship. All the 04+ harness will be the same. For instance, I've got an 07 bike that I took the engine from an 05 and swapped it over. That's how I got the harness. But everything is the same.

That's a deal. But I probably wont have the money til my next paycheck. Do you have any other parts left over from your swap? Gauges, headlight, flaring that I could buy?

I have a lot of parts left over. I will PM you my number so you can call. I do have gauges, the front headlight and main stay and a headlight fairing but other pieces also

My gas tank has a nasty dent in it. However it doesn't leak. I got clr in it soaking. It does have a lot of rust in it. This bike was not complete when I got it. All I'm trying to do is figure out what I need to make it dd. It will be my new transportation til I get my fiero running. Where are you located in georgia? I live close.

I live in Albany GA. There is a thread in the FAQ section on how to clean out the tank. You can try to use compressed air to pop out the dent in the tank.
