Hey all,  :)

Well, I finally found a deal (I hope) and sent some money off today as a deposit on a GS500E.  I wont be able to pick the bike up until 2nd week of January, so the seller is gonna hold it for me till then.

It is a 2000 with approx 900 miles on it.  Price will be $2100.  It is in imaculate shape, and was always garaged.

I hope to put in some progressive springs; and possibly do a rejet and add a K&N to it at the same time in the future.

I look forward to getting out and riding with some of you that may be close to my area.  I am in Spartanburg, SC.

Now it looks as if the bike purchase was the easy part....... Now it is time for a helmet, jacket, pants, and gloves for initial purchase.  Maybe some riding boots later.  Any suggestions as to what gear to look at would be appreciated.

Thanks
Andy

ak and MstrsLilBrat-congrats on your bike purchases! You're in for some fun times for sure. Check out the hoem page here for some useful links and other info and check out my site for some more useful info/mods as well.

In regard to gear-buy the best gear you can afford. if possible buy leather.

-helmet should fit very snug without any hot spots or presure points. It is best to go to dealer and have them help you size it. I ended up buying a helmet I thought was one size too small only to realize a month later it was a perfect fit. (anywhere from $100-$500+)

-jacket, leather preferred. Armor if you can get it. Look for vents also for warm weather riding and a zip in liner for cooler days. ($250+ leather, $150+ textile)

-boots, motorcycle specific if possible. ($100+)

-gloves, buy good leather from a reputable recognized name brand. ($50+)

-pants if you can swing it should zip to your jacket waist. ($100+)

for best deals around on gear (except helmets) try www.newenough.com especially their closeout and used gear section. They also have a great explanatory page on how different manufaturers products fit.

And make sure everything is waterproof for those sudden downpours.  Some leather can bleed in water so your skin comes out blue.  Water proof is a 100% must

as a newbie rider my gear so far:

HJC CL-14 helmet bought from my local dealer $150
- comfy and quiet, definitely some fogging probs tho

joe rocket atomic textile jacket (ridegear.com) $125
- armoured, vented, zip out liner, has kept me warm in 30 degree weather

joe rocket orbit boots (ridegear) $80
- basically regular leather lace-up boots with extra leather for shifting and plastic ankle guards.

dowco guardian cover (ridegear) $75
- my portable garage.

keep in mind that FIT is the absolute most important thing. then consider the helmet features that might raise the price. If its your first helmet I suggest buying a brand that is well known and common. HJC, Shoei, Arai, KBC, among many others are all good helmets. Buy the one that fits correctly, that is oh-so-important.
