has anyone taken their gs500e to a track? i've read a lot of things about gs's and some pople say that the stock gs runs about 13.6 @ 93 mph...some say it runs 14.2 and others say 14.5...

i'm just wondering bacuse i didn't test my stock gs on the 1/4 mile track and now i'm instaling aftermarket parts on it...at the end i want to know how much did the parts help with performance

Hindle full exhaust, Uni filter, 130 mains=~40hp. 15 tooth sprocket. I weigh 150lbs.
My best 1/4 mile was 13.757sec @ 91.87mph w/1.878sec 60ft, 8.555sec @ 78.54mph 1/8 mile.

Best 1/4 mile speed=93.35mph
Best 1/8 mile speed=78.54mph
Best 1/8 mile time =8.507
Best 60ft time=1.873sec

awww man...i was hoping that GS's are faster than that :(

my friend has a stock 2002 ninja 500R and he ran 13.3 on a slick track and he could probobly do 13.0 or 13.1 @ 102 mph

i was hoping that my mods would help me beat his bike...looks like i'm gonna have to install a turbo

Don't bum out dude.  I feel the GS has some of the best handling out there.  If you want power, look for a power bike, not a GS.

The GS has many virtues:  good looks, a nice chassis, light weight, simplicity, cheap insurance...  Gobs of horsepower isn't one of them.

If you want to improve your 1/4 mile times on a GS, you need to shell out some serious money.  Specifically, increasing displacement with an overbore, improving airflow with a cylinder head porting job, and improving aerodynamics with a full fairing.  Even with all those mods, you'll be quicker than a stock EX--  barely quicker.

For the money you're talking, you could upgrade to a used 600 four and blow your buddy on the EX into the weeds.  The easiest way to beat him on your GS is to upgrade your suspension, spoon on some quality rubber, and throw some curves into the mix.

The 500 Ninja has a modern 4 valve water cooled engine.  This engine started life as half of the original 908 Ninja of the mid 80's in a cruiser style bike, the 454 LTD.  The air cooled GS500 engine dates back to the late 70's and really isn't in the same performance class with the Ninja.

I always tell newbies to get the Ninja 500 for performance or the GS500 for handling.  The GS has a suprisingly stiff frame for an econo class bike and the simple addition of the progressive springs and radial tires will make it competative when ridden by a skilled rider with a lot of more highly powered machines in the hands of average riders.  It can be much fun.  Forget the drag strip, take your friend out to the twisties to get even.   :)  :)

Here are the results of all tests of the GS500 I've found since it came out in 1989.

There have been many comparo tests between the two, here are figures from the latest I have.

I have much fun every summer running with friends with bigger engines in the mountain twisties with my GS500.  When you can keep up with friends on liter bikes, you will be ready for one.   :thumb:

Like I have said in the past, my GS is ridiculously fast compared to most for some unknown reason. I have broken 100mph in a quarter mile mroe than a couple times. So perhaps, it comes down to track, variation in bikes, modifictaions (even though mine isnt too heavily modified) and the rider.

/\--- And one last point, I can tell you for a fact that I schooled a 2002 BMW M3 this past august in an improptu street race. 2 weeks before that, I gave a Vette something to think about. HE definatley got a good look at the back of my GS.
