Life Changes

Hey, To start off, Some may see this as a rant...so be it...

So I have made a few life changes as the title states.  As of Thursday I will be done with all the paperwork that is needed to enlist in the United States Army National Guard.  This is a total different direction for me and one I don't see keeping my Bike.  I know, poor me. This decision has not come easy, basically I don't like where I'm at and where I'm heading.  I cant enjoy life as I want and needed a change.  After Basic ill be going back to school full time to finish what i started so long ago.  Then its going to be more Officer Training.  I plan to move probably two more times between now and next summer.   

I have had it listed on Craigslist for about 2 months.  I have had it priced way above what its worth to bascily not sell it.  But if some fool was willing to pay for what i had it listed then they could have it. 

wasnt really sure under what topic this should be posted, if it needs moved so be it. I wont get butt hurt over it.  Didn't want to put in in the "for sale" page as I'm not Huckin it to any joe-shmo.  and if i can figure out a way to keep it...believe me i will!

I love my bike but dint want it sitting around collecting spiders and rust. Not sure which one is worse.  So I'm giving people on here first dibs on the bike.  Its an 06 GSF, around 3500 miles and counting.  I still ride in about twice a week.  The bike is my baby and as such I would really like it to go to someone that loves these bikes as much as i do.  It was a perfect first bike for me!

Life changes, and so do your possessions.  When my son was born in 2008, I hemmed and hawed about what to do with my bike...and ultimately sold it cause I saw myself both not riding it and also needing the money.  That was 2 bikes ago.

If nothing else, stick around.  Many people sell their GS500s and are still here.

So long as you wear the appropriate visibility gear when on base at least, the armed forces don't seem to have any particular bias against bikes, so I don't see the logic here. You could even see about getting a job where you can ride the diesel KLRs at work, though it sounds like you have another direction in mind...

But hey, do what you like. If it's moving and being able to take your bike and stuff in one trip, try a trailer.

Good on you for making the decision to serve. While the guard is not my first choice ........just kidding (I may be biased). It takes  more for someone to make that change than most will ever know. As far as the bike, really try to keep it. Its really nice to have a bike on base as you don't pay ridiculous amounts for taxi fare and you can't feel bad about not giving all your mooching fellow moto-tards (you'll learn) a ride to the px to buy dip and porn. Of you have any questions feel free to send me one ( I will check it this time). Trust me, whatever your recruiter tells you is half true, half bullshit!t, and half a misleading omission. I am slotted for the 14G Air Defense Battle Management System Operator:

Basic is scheduled for the first or second monday in November, then 16 weeks of job training.  After that back to school and then more training to become a Heli Pilot. 

The next two years of my life are being planned, feels weird and great at the same time.  Its going to be good to be part of something bigger then myself.

I'm and old infantry Nam vet and wouldn't change a thing even if I could.
I am who and where I am in life today because of my decision to serve.
It was certainly a life changing experiance, and a good investment in myself.

I will be headed out to Ft. Still November 13th to begin Basic Training.  My AIT is at the same place, lucky me.  I scored high enough on my ASVAB to get the slot I wanted.  14G, radar operator for surface-to-air anti-aircraft system.  Also, did well enough on the test to be able to take the AFAST.  32 weeks of training not including leave for Christmas.   

Once finished, ill be stationed at Ft. Indian town Gap PA.  Right outside of Harrisburg.  Any of your guys from up that way.  Ill be moving sometime around June.

I'm excited and nervous at the same time. Being 29 and already having my degree, going into Basic with a bunch of "kids".  Also, its strange but the one thing I'm most worried about is...don't laugh, bathroom breaks.  I'm not a "quick" pooper....and over the last 10 or so years, have come to develop a habit of doing my business in the morning.  this will probably change.

As always, advise and tails of yesteryear are always welcome.

That's definitely one thing to be worried about. I remember the days in boot where we'd have five or more recruits pissing in one portacrapper at the same time. This is not an exaggeration or falsehood at all.  Recruits standing in a really close circle trying not to piss on each other is crazy. I built up quite a bladder. But as far a droping a deuce, the food they fed us had us so packed up it was rare we needed to take more than a minute. I compare it to pushing a brick out sideways, with about the same amount of cleanup needed. But things change and are different branch to branch and year to year. My brother in law just finished basic for ARMY at benning and said it wasn't bad at all. Lucky ass got stationed in Hawaii. My first duty station was STD hooker get "f"ed in the "a" town of Jacksonville,  NC (MCB Lejune)
