Hi, I am taking my 2004 GS500F to a track day next week. Got this bike so I can go round the trak at a fair pace without getting into bother. This is a structured course so a track noob like me can sart learning from the beginning after 30 years on the road. The F seemed perfect due to the look, lightness and the raised bars. I have done the normal I've just bought a bike service, lubes, oil and filters with plugs. Had a small pressure leak from the sump plug, fixed by using bue goo or RTV. Took the cranes off and cleaned em.
OK if I'm happy with the bike them I'll put an IXIL/Screaming Demon exhaust on, get a K&N filter and re-jet. I'm sorted with the exhaust, what's the best filter (two pods, lunchbox or drop in) and where's the best place to buy it please? I've read so much about jets recently to te point of eh what would I need ?  Thans for your help :)

If you're looking to do more trackdays, the first thing you should spend money on is the suspension. If this is a dedicated race bike, a front end swap and a R6 shock are a good bet. For a street/track bike, I'd suggest installing springs/emulators/oil up front, and R6 in the rear.

Exhausts, engine mods, etc... Are good for racing. For trackdays, suspension and ergonomics take precedence.

Thanks Burning1 the backend is fairly soft even when cranked up and is a tad on the low side, I was thinking of risers , but replacing em does sound better. Which year range on the R6R would fit? The front end- would I get away with changing out just the forks? Or emulators in the short term? cheers for the advice  :)

A very mild rise can help... Very mild, like less than an inch. Better suspension still helps though.

Any R6 shock 08+ can fit. See the wiki for details - there are a couple of details you need to know. R6S shock will not fit.

The forks are the front end. Lots of people just upgrade the springs, but emulators are totally worth it, IMO. They cost ~$150 on the GS, and install very easily. Springs are more important though.

If the bike is track only, and you're okay loosing the instrument cluster, a full fork swap is about the same price, and produces better results than doing the internals/brakes/clipons/etc on the GS500. If you want the cluster, stick with the stock forks and do the internals.

If you stick with stock forks, consider a stronger, upgraded forkbrace as well.
