Hi guys I have a gs500 2006 model and would like to change my seat and back plastics like in the picture above^. Would anyone be able to tell me what year and model gs they are off? I can't find that seat with the strap anywhere!

Also if anyone knows where I can get them parts apart from the wreckers?

Thanks!

Judging from the material on the tank, maybe its a custom seat?

actually, the tank seat and plastics are off the pre-F model bike. tank cover? dunno, looks like its a strap-on :flipoff: :icon_mrgreen:

honestly, it could be a pre-F model frame with a transplanted engine, though the resolution isn't high enough to tell.

seat has a custom old style strap on top, it looks like though, but the pan shape is the same.

and maybe the front fender is slimmed down?

The windscreen is a Puig Vision. I have one on my GS.

The tank has a cover on it like one from saddle man's.
That bikes begging for a chin spoiler.

04+ engine with an oil cooler and an 89-96 side cover in a painted 89-00 frame judging by the petcock and the lack of fairing bracket holes... Being one to want to put those together I'd narrow down by goin ahead and saying its an 89-96 frame.

Edit: forgot to add the bars - adidasguy would probably chime in to tell you exactly which ones but they are 89 stock clip-ons.  Exactly which type or euro type and so forth I dunno.
Also the indicators are really small profile aftermarket.

Appear to be 89 bars (also sold a little in 1990) as I think I see the screws on the back of the clips.
Not an 89 frame as 89's did not have the plastic plug for the top of the shock.
I have seen photos of seats with the strap but outside the USA and only older models. Also seen mention of bikes where you see the holes for the seat strap and they say they removed the seat strap.
Hybrid engine: '04+ due to engine cooler so came from an "F" model. Side covers being black are from older engine which is OK since they are all the same except for paint color.
Older front fender due to the rubber guide for the speedo cable but should have a mud flap.
Non-US bike due to size of license plate.
Tank cover is a strap on. You can buy those.
Note rear reflector below license plate: no doubt in a country that does inspections --- requiring rear reflector but no side reflectors.
Aftermarket turn signals.
Frame was pained as were lower forks, exhaust pipes, wheels, headlight ring, and other stuff.
Date stamp on lower part of photo is day-month-year due to the "26" so again European is my guess.

My guess would be southern Mediterranean country. Someone might recognize the products on the window sill in the upper right of the photo. My first guess would be Spain then Portugal based on the seat strap and recalling other photos I've seen of it.

Maybe a mid-year change.
All have the plug for the swing arm bolt. 89's I've seen around here did not have the upper plug for the shock bolt.

Possibly mid year?
Mines build date is July 89 and it has the plug.

Ok thanks I've done some extra research and i think your right sledge the seat and back plastics are off a 1991 GS 400 E (see here http://www.suzukicycles.org/GS-series/GS400.shtml). Those bars are sweet apparently the 89 model is the only model with clip ons, wonder whey they didn't keep them around longer  :dunno_black:

Also the tank cover is called a bagster tank cover, made to fit the gs500

So, one more question... IF that is a modern frame then will those (the seat and plastics) fit straight onto my 06 gs500?

codajastal

Short answer is NO
Frames are slightly different

But do you think it can be ..ah.. manipulated ? How did the guy in the photo do it?

Short answer is YES.
Your bike '06' is different to the one in the photo. The frames were changed slightly in 2002 I believe, hence the different tail end to yours.
All the parts on that one in the photo will fit my bike as its a 89 and same frame.
Your bolting points for the seat, tank and plastics are different to the older one in the photo, HOWEVER, I am sure you could do a workaround to make it all fit.
Hope that helps.
I am sure one of the smarter guys will confirm or correct when they wake up. :thumb:

I honestly don't think it would be worth the effort and cost.  The plastics on your 06 look better to me. So just get the tank cover for your tank, then the only thing you would be lacking is the little strap on the seat..

I'd like to put some more of these things together given the info about the 91GS400E...  The bike probably started as a GS400E, and then the 04+ GS500F Motor was transplanted into it later in life.

My recommendation, if you like that style of bike, sell you '06 and buy an early '90s bike. My $.02.
