I got a welding torch for Christmas?

I got a sweet little set-up for everything I need to start gas cutting and welding except the tanks.
I went to Home Depot and the only tanks they had were bundeled with the same stuff I got in my starter kit.
All the welding stores are closed until Monday and I am inpatiant . I was hoping one of you folks would know what I will have to pay to rent or buy ?

I've been wondering the same thing.  The only welding supply place I have visited around here caters to large accounts (the public school system, industry, etc.) and they didn't want to talk to me.

Thanks for the reminder - I'll have to hit the phone book again and look for other welding shops that will let me rent/buy the tanks, or that will fill my own tanks if I get one of those setups that includes 'em.

Tell us what you find out!

well, a small oxy acetalene,   Plumbers portable kit only ran me like 25$ to fill both,  small set just comes yup to knees about 5" in diameter. basicly you buy your first set, then its an exchange for full ones, you will not likly see your nice shiny new bottles ever again after your first exchange.

I own my own tanks.  Years ago I finally got tired of paying the lease on rented tanks, I guess 'cuz I don't use 'em that much & it grated me to pay to have something that just sat around so much.  I get them filled at the local BOC gas supply & they have always been very good to me even though I spend pennies there compared to their big accounts.  John, you're in SoCal right?  I gotta think there's gonna be an industrial supplier nearly within walking distance to you (not that I'm suggesting that a southern Californian might walk anywhere... ;) ). Try the phone book & get on the phone tomorrow.  Airco is another source I've used now that I think about it, but I haven't used them for a long time.  The BOC folks are nice to me -  :)
The size of the tanks you buy is gonna be a function of how much you plan to use them & how fat your wallet is.  Or, you could start out leasing, get some experience with how big you need your tanks & then buy 'em later.  Yeah, I like that idea best.

Thanks for the info.
I was worried that some places might not fill your tanks if you don't buy from them but that does not seem to be the norm.
I am so excited :o I haven't welded since college.

Actually, that gets me thinking...  You may want to ask about that when you're on the phone shopping.  It seems to me a few years ago I tried to get my tanks filled at an Airco place & they wouldn't touch them because they were BOC tanks. It's been quite while & my memory is pretty fuzzy, but you'd be well advised to ask the question.  Of, course if you lease tanks you'd have the same issue anyway, so maybe it's something you're gonna hafta just live with either way.

Oh, yeah, yamahonkawazuki, love the GS chopper.  Now it needs a 3 foot sissy bar with a skull at the top.  Maybe extend the forks about 12 inches, too.   ;)

Although, I should be able to weld some decent looking pasenger pegs onto the sub frame. Interested, Pablo ?

As always!

[but before you endeavor to cut the rear pegs consider how you will hang your exhaust...might consider leaving the forward leg of the right "V" supporting the exhaust can. I am not totally happy with my temp-turned-permament solution and too busy to deal with it...]

So John ... what ever happened with the oxy-acetylene outfit?  I noticed that you listed The Welder's Handbook on your list of current "reads" in a different thread.

* Did you find some tanks to buy or rent?
* Have you done any cutting / welding yet?
* If so, on what?

No, all my new torches are still in the basement :( Thanks for reminding me :x  ;)
I have been strapped for cash since the holidays and the tanks are not going to be cheap and I don't want to rent or lease. Going to cost around $200 for a couple mid size tanks. I am thinking next month I should have the dough. I will let you know as soon as I start blowing things up, or uhh building stuff
