What did  you use for polishing the side covers? They look really good.

A little late....   but.....  when I repaint the clips for the handle bars, I first file off the seam from the metal casting process so they are smooth all the way around. Though they do look really good.

Just for reference on color and appearance, here is what a brand new set of 1989 clip-ons look like. I found a new set at a bike warehouse in Israel a few months ago.

bilayer paint polishing I personally did 2 stages

1) sanding the varnish with sandpaper number 2000/2500 permanently lubricated with water .... at this stage we remove all imperfections and try to let the varnish completely smooth and opaque

2) is applied to a liquid for polishing slurry is applied onto a soft fabric piece is rubbed in a circular (when the workpiece to be polished permitting)
Patiently gradually begin to see ourselves reflected in the varnish

is a rather tedious task, but when we finished and we see the results they will get more of a smile

Very important NEVER polish paintings in the sun, always in the shade .... and after polishing, give it a coat of protective wax ..... with those steps have bright paint for long!

In your case and from the photos, before painting you'll need a good primer ..... because aluminum is seen that decreases polished paint adhesion on metal

It's a little more work, but believe me it's worth!

Any questions you have, ask!! happy to help!

I posted that photo for your reference. They are new, original 1989's with the original OEM paint. They are new, in the original wrapping from 1989.
I thought you might like to see what original handle bar holders looked like.
They do not need painting as they are new, original parts.
I sometimes paint used ones which are badly scratched.

@maxkart

I am jealous of your painting prowess. I have been painting the same computer tower for a month over and over trying to get results half as good as yours before trying on my bike. For now, back to youtube for my education.
If god intended us to drink beer, he would have given us stomachs.

do not get discouraged, more important that is required when you work so, so have many desires, time and patience... but it is very difficult ending things well... and never have fear to be wrong... is part of the process of learning... I from here I can't tell you how I do things, but that does not mean that they are correctly carried out... I can't complain so far of my paint jobs... hope continue learning and improving with practice... question... If I can help you any questions you may have, it do without qualms, that be sure

I use 2 HVLP guns inexpensive type are made in china ....... and I can say I have been successful, certainly not for the program call me overhaulin haha .....

I am attaching some photos of the guns, the most important is the size of the peak diffuser .... having at least 1 millimeter ..... if bigger is better! but care more paint comes out and is easier to squirt!!
