So whats happening? Is there any winner? Seems to have evolved in to a discussion of nukes.

yamahonkawazuki

you and slips adidas were essentially tied for being closest. normally the google is your friend here.  ( specially in this game. but ill be damned if the only pictures of this item i can find, are dra2wings from a 1970s era document. on pdf the answer IS on the base, ( what it is and goes to etc. ) a bit of background information. this came from essentially a site ( a nuclear plant in the oak ridge area) reactor was more or less modeled after hanford. the initials of the project is CRBRP ( btw it ( item) was never inservice. there were some uses of it to perform a scram ( a hopper of these type balls which would shut down the process if the rods decided not to work or got stuck. this item however was structural or mechanical in nature allowing a process to happen. in a distant way it IS involved with the fuel rods. but not directly. im glowing in anticipation, ill pick closest winner if no one hits it tonight by midnight.

Closer head assembly bearing.

Or

Steam turbine bearing.

Lets see,

CRBRP - Clinch River Breeder reactor project
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinch_River_Breeder_Reactor_Project

Some more details on how it was to work
http://www.osti.gov/bridge/servlets/purl/4311171-5DbhpR/4311171.pdf

The boron carbide balls they would have used for a scram (entered via gravity) are normally marble sized, and I would have assumed would be much duller than the much larger sphere you have a photo of.. The only other material would be Silver-indium-cadmium which would have been available back in 1977..

So I would guess it may be part of the assembly for introducing the liquid sodium into the system?

I have worked on most other types of power stations here, but we are nuclear free in this country...

Good luck to anyone who can guess it..

pliskin got it. it is a reactor vessel closure head bearing and spacer. ( i was guessing on the size of the scram setup. i was reading through pdfs for hours.

I just have to say, it is so cool that you have a part of a nuclear reactor.  A friend of mine has a space shuttle tile.  Anyone else have parts of really cool, not for public possession type stuff?

I have the army manual of land warfare
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Lens for a camera projector? Like a device you'd use in a classroom or lab to take pictures/project pages/parts onto a screen or magnify them to input into a PC?
It seems it has become necessary to qualify my posts:
I am/am not trying to start an argument. This post is/is not intended to be a personal attack. I am/am not merely attempting to present a different viewpoint.

Select the words that apply to you.
