Looking at the photo. .. big 'metal' section, a gap then thin metal section.... is it goldy/foily stuff layer onto plastic/polymer sheet? Can't see how they keep it parallel otherwise. .. not a guess but trying to figure out base material

The 2 strips are kept parallel because of the text. *Hint*
What gets printed on the big sheet is closely related to what gets put on the smaller strip. Does that help any?

Well my early thoughts were. . Its a polishing machine thingy! .. but then it became apparent that the strip was the thing... things are NEVER or at least rarely OBVIOUS! .. it's the what is this game. . Not the ...this is a! game...

I thought my mortise saw was easy. .. once I knew what it was... 'surely there'll be a wood type person guessing here!?"...

Sorry for the delay guys. I'm about to get on a plane, so I'll keep it short.
The "thing" in this case is the machine, not the strip. It's a foil embossing machine for impressing titles on hard Cover books.

I never said the thing was the strip. I just figured it would help determine the machine use if you can figure out what the strip was.
The machine is used for soft cover books too, but mostly hard Cover. That particular run was bibles, I think.
