That's kinda along the lines of what I was thinking, though I can't begin to guess the actual application.
So is the ring designed to prevent a shaft from rotating inside a cylinder, such as a hydraulic ram or similar?

Iarn

No, the ring as another application directly related to the piston. The piston and the ring interact, on the regular. They are explicitly separate components, but they do touch. Not the shaft that the piston moves along. The ring and the piston only interact at very specific times. You could say they only interact in extremes.

Man, we went from hand sanitizer to this?

Is it just a phosphor bronze bushing?

No, it isn't a bushing. You guys give up, yet?

ragecage23

I do. I even tried a Google search

Time for another clue!
We typically will give 2-3 clues before calling it a stumper.

Iarn

I have like 4 by now! Haha... let me think.

It sits at end of the piston's travel. One on each end.

Elmojo

What I mean is that when the first type of clue (how it's used) doesn't help, then we move on to something like what industry it's used in or similar.
I agree that you've posted a good one, and I'm fine with calling it a stumper and letting you post something new.
Let's see what others think...

A blocking ring for a synchromesh transmission?

Ragecage. That is closeish, but it doesn't go in a transmission.

Iarn

Okay, im going to go ahead and give up the ghost here.

It's a cushion for a 4" piston. Stops the piston moving any further along the cylinder and isolates it from the other bits.

Who's next?

Elmojo

Cool!
Since we didn't guess it, it's still your turn.

Janx101

Cool that's what it is... but a 4" piston for a what? ;)

Iarn

Retractable thermocouple is what it goes to. It's basically a giant thermometer that reports the temps to whatever it's hooked up to. The piston moves the thermometer into the slurry while isolating the sensitive bits from the super heated material.

Anyway, here's the next bit.

Elmojo

Can we get a little clearer photo?
It's so fuzzy it could be about anything from a hot dog to a crayon. lol

Sure. Is this better?

Hmmm...little bit...
Kinda looks like a pencil case. :)
