I recently found a stock 2005 R1 muffler in my friends garage that he is willing to part with. Currently i have to stock one pipe exhaust and was checking if anyone had tried a slip on such as this.
I know that I will have to take it somewhere to move the bolt to connect to the bracket on the bike and also change the angle and maybe length of the pipe going into the muffler.

Here is a picture of what the muffler looks like

Thanks

I was probably going to just put one of them on just for space reasons.

I havent had a chance to call around yet, but would a muffler shop be able to do the reshaping the pipe, moving the bolt attachment, and welding of the new muffler?

gsatterw

Most likely. You won't like the price I'd guess

A good shop and make new pipes and bend/weld as needed. I dont think it would cost that much and certainly not as much as it you were doing a car/truck. When i had all new pipes welded up for my truck it was $300 for me here but I had headers put on, left the cats off, added electric cutouts, dual mufflers and tips so it was quite a bit or work to make everything line up and weld it all together

On a side note, I have one Yoshi TRS on mine now and have another one on the bench that needs to get put on the other side. What can I say? I like to be different ;)

Would I have to get new pipes? The ones i have now are discolored but not in bad shape. I have some room money wise since i am getting the muffler for less than $20 since they have been sitting in my friends garage for awhile.

weedahoe

You wont need new pipes. Just clean yours really good (steel wool) and respray with them with some 1600* high temp engine/exhaust paint

Ive wanted to repaint for awhile and ill probably do it after i get the muffler on. Ill be checking with a local muffler shop in the next couple days to see if they can do the work and how much it would cost

Thanks for the video, I hope the R1 muffler will sound similar since that is the sound i want

punisherlp

I checked with a couple places in town today. The motorcycle shop priced it as $300 to do which is ridiculous, so i took it to a muffler shop which gave me an estimate of $140. Its more expensive than i thought it would be but still a lot cheaper than a full system.

Would the fact that the muffler is designed for a larger engine make it sound strange when it is installed? I wasnt sure of this because the R1 is dual exhaust. Just double checking before i make the appointment to have it installed

weedahoe

Only problem about asking how it wil sound is that its opinionated. Videos help but some cams record sound differently so they may not be accurate. Best thing is to hear it in person but thats hard because not everyone has that bike around you.

So overall, all you can do it put it on and see how you like it.

That my opinion.... ;)

I'd paint that sucker black or something if I were you. I think it looks goof when mated with the gs500, may look better black.

But to each his own

The guy i got the muffler from still has his R1 and his brother has a newer R1. I love the sound that they have, a nice low rumble at lower RPMs and not annoying like some sport bikes at higher RPMs. Im hoping that the sound will translate enough since the gs is a much smaller bike.

And the exhaust will be painted black when i get around to painting the whole exhaust. I agree that it looks kinda strange with the current color that it is.

gsatterw

Well, the R1's cylinders are roughly the same displacement as the gs500's cylinders, and the R1 has 2 mufflers, so I imagine it would sound roughly the same, but not quite as loud?

Anything is an improvement over the stock exhaust sound. ill be taking the bike back in a week to have the muffler put on, thanks for the help and ill post a video once its done

punisherlp

The muffler shop was a complete fail and they ruined one of the mufflers that I bought by cutting and trying to weld the pipes together. Ive got one other shot with the other muffler and i found a friend in town that just made an exhaust system for his bike, so im going to give it a try this weekend

Just in case you need it, I have two Yoshimura TRS mufflers for sale
