I would expect a '04+ tach would be cheaper and easier than another head.  One less place to leak oil, too.

Don't you need a TPS and some other electronic gizmos to make an 04+ tach work with an 02 prior?

yea, I was under the impression that I would need an entirely new wiring harness. I remember adidas saying something about how it is a real pain in the ass to do

No, I never said it was a pain in the ass to do. I'm not sure what you're referring to. I do say that in all my bike builds I will use newer wiring harnesses because they are cheaper and in better condition. I don't ever recall saying using a newer tach was a problem.

It should be simple to connect the tach to +12 and ground then the signal input to the input of a coil as others have mentioned. I even mentioned you should simply get a newer tach rather than swap heads again. (read down through prior posts).

ah. I misunderstood what you were saying here

My bad.

Is there a thread somewhere that explains in a bit more detail how the swap is done?

It was in reference to replacing everything with the 04+ wiring harness. All that would be a pain if only to use the electronic tach. I recall there I was trying to discourage rewiring the bike just because of the tach and mentioned how to connect up the newer tach to old wiring.

Ok, so I run a wire from the tach to the battery (is that what +12 means?), and another wire from the tach to ground (just somewhere on the engine?), and another wire to the input of a coil?

How many wires come off of the tach?

Sorry I have so many questions, I really have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to anything electrical.

Thanks

+12 means 12 volts positive.

There should be a wiring harness graphic somewhere that details the wires and their purpose.

I don't know, but I would guess the wire colors would all match.  At least your +12 would connect to an orange wire and ground would connect to a black/white wire.

3 wires, I believe.
