Hey there, question.........

One of the stud bolts of my tachometer (2001 GS500) has sheared off!! (long explanation...it just has)
Is there a fix? Can just the stud be replaced? Basically all the threads are gone....

I got a bad feeling about this. (Replace the Tach?)
Thanks to anyone with input!!!

Saw a tach on ebay for 8 bucks yesterday, saw one go for 15 or so last week...

I'm really not sure of what you're describing (its probably just me), so I'm not sure what else to suggest without seeing a pic  :dunno_black:

Edit: Where are you located?  The $8 tach is from hungary so shipping is $30 to the states, so prolly not cost effective if you aren't near there...

There is a full damaged set for $19.99 buy it now and free shipping, if the part you need is usable on that one.

Tried to upload a picture but file too big.

Basically on the back of your tach there are 2 bolts/nuts holding it in place to the cover/back housing. One has sheared off.
Nothing for the nut to hold on to at all. No threads.

I have resigned myself to getting a replacement unless I hear otherwise.

Thanks either way!

I'm in Toronto, Canada.

The $40 is still cheaper than most other options thanks.

There's a bunch of tachometers on Ebay for under 30 dollars with free shipping. Based on your situation, unless you wanna glue a new stud on then i say just replace it.
I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.

You will need a mechanincal one so 8989-2002 will do. However I believe 299102002 have a chrome bezel rather than black.

The plastic used in the back of the gauges is very soft plastic --- super easy to glue. Good smelly plastic cement will do it. It dissolves easily in MEK so get a small quanity of a plastic cement that has MEK and glue it back on. Since MEK dissolves the plastic, it really welds it there. It is not a surface glue that just holds things together.

Look for a glue for styrene or other plastics with MEK (methyl-ethyl-ketone). The smellier and the higher it gets you the better.

If I recall correctly, the stud is made of brass or something similar, and pressed/molded into the plastic of the tach.  If you have access to a tap and die set you could file off the remaining stud flat and VERY carefully still and tap a hole to put your own stud in (with thread locker).
