This is an old thread.  :)    My 97 GS had the idle hanging up problem, I bought it new in Mar 99 after it sat on a showroom floor 2 years.  Dealer cleaned the carbs and put in a new battery and it ran good until summer but it was obviously considerably leaner than the Nighthawk 650 I traded in on it with the temp in the upper 30's the day I rode it home.  I soon noticed the idle hang up on warmer days and solved the problem pretty much the same way  tt_four did above.  I'd ride off with a 11-1200 rpm idle and when I came to a stop and it raced to 3-4k rpm I'd just reach under the carbs and turn the idle down very slowly until it dropped off.  Had to repeat a couple times at stops and as I recall I did it another day or two.  Bike had a good idle the rest of that summer and I put over 20k miles on it the first year.  Never had any further problem with it for the 80k miles I put on it until it was totalled and replaced in Sept 03 by my current 02 GS.

The 02 GS had about 4k miles on it then and has about 97k on it now and never had the idle hanging up problem.  It has the newer 3 circuit carbs and was much more flexible in the mid range and much less lean than the 97 GS was with it's 2 circuit carbs.  I never modified the carbs on either GS for the 175k miles I ran them, completely stock all the way.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

Yes, old thread... but unresolved (till now). Thanks for the update.

I was experiencing a similar issue with mine. Turned out that the air screw adjustment on both carbs were too lean. Adjusting each to 3 turns out and then lowering the idle adjustment was the fix for me. Bike idles smooth, no popping out of the carbs and no hanging of idle after slowing to a stop or revving engine in neutral.
