hey im new to the forums and i just recently started building my first ever road bike (have ridden dirt bikes for years) and its an almost completed completely original parts except the engine and frame was painted by the guy i got it from 10 years ago and so now its flaking off... and now i got to sand and patch those areas.

Ok here is my problem. My starter in the bike will turn over the bike, but i dont get any spark. and i dont know why. i dont know how to check the ignition coils. I have been using a needle with a light bulb and wire on it to test all other connections.

Would very much appreciate any help from the GS gods out there.

i will post pictures of it later.

tell us how you're checking for spark

Checking ignition coils requires an ohm meter.

Measure the resistance between the two terminals, and than the terminals and ground, and compare it to specs in a clymer manual.

Sitting that long, I bet its something fuel delivery related.

Did you drain the tank?

Drain the tank, drain the float bowls, refill the tank with 1/4 bottle of seafoam, and try to see if the jets aren't too clogged to crank.

Easiest way to verify spark is to take the plugs out, leave them connected to the coil and lay them on the engine head and crank it over. Dusk or night time is always better and seeing in full daylight is harder but possible.

Well be bike isnt running quite yet, maybe a few days? My dad started the project about 10 years ago but switched to 3 wheelers and this was just neglected and i told him i'd take it off his hands. I have the spark plugs already out and laying on the head, when i give the starter motor power, it turns everything over, has good compression and such. I just dont know why there isnt spark, i am just trying to get the engine to fire so i dont assemble everything and then find out it doesn't fire at all and must redo it all.

I have the kick stand up & button pressed in, bikes in neutral (but indicator light wont light up and tell me), have a good battery also... here are a couple pics of the bike, and tell me if i have to put any of the exterior parts on for it to work. thank you.

I have posted pictures of the motorcycle on my craigslist ad so you guys can see it easier.

If neither plug is firing I would think the CDI is bad but that's an assumption. It would just be odd for both coils to die. With that being said, pull the fuel tank off and verify both coils are connected to the frame and both have the correct wires connected to them

Very important! I had one wire fall off the right side coil when doing my valves and didn't notice until everything was back together. They're easy to knock off

i have checked everything. i just got done sanding all the points where the left coil would be touching the frame. I know my CDI box is good because i tested it several times.

also, EMAIL me if you want an item off my list. thanks. apeman08@yahoo.com

can also test it if you get your hands on an old chevrolet ignition coil. i carried one as a spare in case coil went down. ( along with several zip ties )

Hi

I suppose it's only fair I offer a usefull general tech post being a newbie & all

Note a simple industry standard old school test for any traditional designed ignition coil

E.G. spark test:

Step 1,

Simple connect any insulated copper wire direct to the positive terminal of yr battery. the coils primary input source.

Step 2,

Take out 1 of yr spark plugs & connect it to the supressor cap, place the sp plug side on' ish on the engines barrel/head (if un painted surface)

Take the other end of yr 4ft + long wire you connected to the battery, disconnect the primary + wire from the coil you want to test & touch breifly for max 1 second the ( 5mm or so stripped ) end of yr wire direct from the battery to the coils + primary input E.G. pwr supply in.

Instantly a health spark accross the spark plug electrode should be evedent.

Repeat the same test for the other coil !he same test via the end of the suppression lead ( coil  secondary)

No spark ! Unscrew the suppressor cap & try t

No spark ! coil/s dead (very unlikely case)

Spark (yes) then you have a prob via the wiring harness re voltage open circuit, or fuse, or CDI more correctly termed (TCI) or perhaps timming pick up/s at the end of the crankshaft RH/ side.

See how you go via the above legit test method, note important only touch the coil primary in for max 1 sec at a time or if for too long you can destroy the coils windings.Above is a standard wk shop test most yong bike mech's wouldn't even know these days,
