Valve Clearance

I checked my valve clearance and on LI, LE and RI i could only fit a 0.05 feeler gauge ... Yes 0.05 NOT 0.5

Couldn't fit one into my RE, and my feeler gauges go down to 0.025

Is there any other damage likely to have been caused?

Cheers

Open it up asap. Get that shim changed now!
It is possible the valve is not closing properly. That will cause the valve seats to get burnt and pitted. That is not a good thing.

Darkzy

Already opened (in my kitchen :D) not moving till shims get here.

Just wanted to know what the chances of damage are, posted a thread about a weird chirp like noise, i rode it for all of an hour before deciding it's time to be taken apart again.

adidasguy

That chirp might have been gasses escaping through a not-fully-closed valve. Kind of like a whistle.
open up that exhaust to the GStwins spec of 8 to 10. I think Suzuki is 5 to 8 but we like the exhaust valves looser. Someone should know the exact numbers. Bluesmudge, are you here? You know them.

saw a video online from a gstwins member BaltimoreGS said 10 for the exhaust and 3-8 (so 8 ) for the intake...

Paulcet

Relax!

You are talking in mm, right?  That .05 is right in the middle of the spec.  Could you rotate the bucket on RE?  If so, you had some clearance, and very unlikely to have any damage.

right, RI - 0.050  RE - 0.125 LI 0.025 LE - under 0.015

Will check again tomorrow using different feeler gauges to be sure....

EDIT: typo

Paulcet

Oh, so it's LE that is under?  But still able to turn it right?  Don't sweat it.

and Left intake is under...

To be fair the chirping was from left side?

also going to re-spec all shims any way.. also was running lean on right side if that helps?

Darkzy

right all shimmed ... Still makes a noise

Took a video (not best quality) Best indication of noise is at 0.20 onwards

+1

Check exhaust header bolts. Are the exhaust gaskets good?

Calpantera

I know how to fix that squeak!

1. Put your bike in a quiet area, maybe under some trees
2. Make sure the motor is cool and remove the spark plug on the left side of the motor.
3. Put a trail of nuts on the ground leading from the left side of the motor towards the tree you parked under.
4. Wait patiently for that dang squirrel to get outta your motor!!

Have you fitted different filters or removed and refitted the old ones?

I had a similar sound when revving my gsx250 when I hadn't fitted the filters properly, fastening the jubilee clip fixed the issue.

Darkzy

Was doing before I did clearances... Is why i did them haha ... Yeah all clips done up fine.
