Throttle lag

Hey All - I have a '93 GS500E. I'm getting some lag when throttling down. There's good snap back at the handle but the engine continues to rev for a few seconds before it comes down completely. Before I go poking around I wanted to get your ideas. The bike only has 5K on it and it has sat for long periods of time. I had it out over the weekend and the engine runs smooth and it idles fine. Could this be a cable lube issue?

Thanks.

Some things to try:

Carb related.  When was the last time you cleaned them?  Any air leaks?
Ignition related.  Your battery and plugs good?
Valve Clearance.  Have you adjusted them in the past 4000 miles?
Bikeless and Broke at the moment...

jestercinti - Thanks for the reply.

I just purchased a new gel battery a week ago. The plugs look new. I checked the gap on both. They are the spec plugs. I'll replace the anyway.

The carbs haven't been cleaned since I owned the bike which is only a few weeks. It did have a carb cleaning and gaskets replaced over a year ago but it has sat a lot since then so that could be the problem.

There's a a tad over 5K on it and I'm not sure if the valves have ever been adjusted.

With the throttle not coming down, there could be an air leak causing the sliders not to come down as fast as they should. The flow of air is holding them up.

Do the "spray everywhere with WD40" thing to see where there might be a leak. Could be a gasket, connection or crack in a hose.

Thanks, adidasguy. I'll check all that out and get back.

I know with an improperly adjusted idle air screw on the carb, my bike would hang idling and come down slowly effectively giving no engine brake. Ride around for 15 minutes, set your idle screw right (1200 rpm) and see if that helps. Also make sure your choke cable is routed correctly and isn't binding on anything (gas lines, air filter box, etc).

Thanks, Dizzledan. I'll give it a try and let you know what happens.
