What to look for. Buyng a GS500

I'm new to riding (took the safety course in WA).  I was wondering if there was anything specific to look for when inspecting a GS500 before buying?

Several things:

1. Maintenance history.  Very important.
2. Appearance and evidence of "tinkering".  Should give an indication of how it was taken care of.  There are good previous owners, and bad previous owners.
3. Loud knocking noises typically indicate oil issues.  Soft "click-click-click" are valves.  OK, but must be soft.  Youtube some videos to see what it sounds like.  The #1 killer of the GS500 engine is running out of oil.  Air cooled engines consume a little oil BY DESIGN.
4. Overall driveability, acceleration, and engine smoothness.
5. Does it smoke?  It shouldn't.  Not a 2-stroke.

Look for rust in the tank.  GS tanks are particularly prone to rust if they are left to sit without fuel in them.  In general you are always better off buying a bike that gets ridden.  You will get some indication of this by the condition of the tires (are they 10 years old?, anything over 5 is no good).
