So I bought a 2008 gs500f  off of Craigslist for a great price. The guy who had it before me only put 300 miles on it in the 2 years he owned it so I'm not too sure about the maintenance he did to it. I have ridden it a little since I got it but I have a feeling it overheated. While I was riding, I was going around 70 and then it started to make a funny sound and lost some power. It lost the rest of the power and eventually shut off when I released the clutch. It started up about 5 minutes after that but it didn't stay started for a while but I couldn't go above 30mph before it did the same thing.

Have you changed the oil? Hows the oil level? Is your gas cap vent clogged? Bike running really rich? A rich problem gets worse as a bike warms up if I remember right

Sounds a lot like what my happened to my previous engine. Popped the oil cap and saw this:

Check your oil.

adidasguy

Are you out of gas?
You may think there is gas when you look in, but maybe not much. It can be deceptive. Tried putting on reserve?

taz_oh

I could have swore I had gas lol. I will check tomorrow. I actually didn't make it home.

taz_oh

But yeah I changed the oil when I first got it. Maybe not even a month ago.

RossLH

Yeah, so did I, filled it earlier that day in fact. Still don't know where it went to this day, there was no sign of leakage anywhere.

weedahoe

I was thinking an oil leak or low oil also. That was my first thought.

I'm thinking low oil. I went and put 2 quarts of oil in it along with some gas and I at least got it home, but it didn't feel like it had all of its power. I worry that something may be gravely wrong. Any suggestions?

skunkteeth

It was 2 quarts low? How are you checking the oil level?

That has happened to me twice. Both oil and fuel fine. Only seem to do it when riding at high speed for a period of time but after shutting down it starts straight up after 5 mins rest. I have full power after that unlike you though.
I am not interested in anything you have to say
Don't bother talking to me, I will not answer you

weedahoe

Engine only holds 3 quarts. If you were 2 qrts low, you better be keeping a better eye on it or start looking for a new engine

Check oil on the center stand? Not the side stand!
