Hello everyone.
I'm currently babysitting a 97 gs500e for a buddy of mine who is currently serving overseas. He purchased the bike for $1000 and in crappy condition (i.e not working, and in desperate need of fixing up). I brought the bike back to life and took it to the shop earlier today for inspection and left within 15 min. Needless to say, the bike needs a lot more work and $$$ put into it before it will pass inspection. I need a whole new kit for the rear brakes including a new disc since the rear brakes locked up and are completely screwed. So I have 3 options:

1) order the parts and fix it myself and try to haggle him down a couple hundred dollars (although I'm pretty sure te price is set)

2) have the shop order and install all parts necessary to repair the said issues and pass inspection.

3) do nothing and begin my search for a bike of my own that is in great condition and isn't/won't be in need of costly repairs anytime in the near future.

What do you guys think?

Not really about what we think...because...most of us will say "fix it yourself and keep it!"

First...are you a handy diy person?

Do you like the bike? Is it what you want? Thats the key. If all it needs is rear brakes but it runs well...be a waste to not just fix it. What else is wrong? A lot of parts can be found very cheap, and I'm sure between the knowledge here and some of the parts collections we all have, you won't have much of a problem.

Yeah, you can probably get all the parts you need from Pinwall (eBay) cheap. And as said above, if you like the bike and are handy with a wrench, DIY!

If something/anything has been treated badly and is in that poor a condition u never know what else is hidden just waiting to go wrong....to me it's untrustworthy.
If there is no special reason to purchase the bike i would pass on it and buy better elsewhere.
