Mostly because it ran.

Over the winter, I totally rehauled the bike: progressive springs, renthal bars, bigger sprocket, windshield, the works. Then, right before riding season in upstate New York, I moved down to SW Florida to do a little software work. I didn't bring a car, motorcycle, bicycle; nothing but me and my two feet.

Transportation isn't really an issue, but of course I had to pick something up. I snagged a 1981 Honda CB900c off Craigslist that had been disassembled by the PO for $550, plus $75 to the guy I got to haul it back to my place. Well, now I'm in the middle of rebuilding it, which is way tougher when you weren't the one to take it apart, and I just want to ride, and not have to deal with all this worn out plastic, and all these parts, and I just miss my GS.

Therapy session done.

Would you like a hug?  We have some guys here that look forward to doing that sort of thing.

Above comment translated from john-ese to English: "Let me love you." :whisper:
It seems it has become necessary to qualify my posts:
I am/am not trying to start an argument. This post is/is not intended to be a personal attack. I am/am not merely attempting to present a different viewpoint.

I just bought myself a '78 Yamaha XS400 for cheap. Been fixing it up while riding the GS. It's been fun the the PO killed the carbs, and I swear the USPS knows when I really want something and takes extra time to deliver it... I am looking forward to putting it back together though, as I'll be the only one to blame for not knowing how it all goes back.

Good luck with the build and enjoy, it's all just for fun!

Mechanical things are pretty logical.
Keep at it man,as long as all the parts are there & u have a Workshop Manual u should be ok.
Post before/after pics.

Nothing is worse than a pile of parts from something you did not take apart.

and reading .. at the end of the page .. "the 'XYZ' can now be mounted in position and the bolt tightened to 70ft/lbs" .... turn the page .. "but first make sure to check that you have properly sealed the 'ABC' because the XYZ will prevent easy access" ..  :icon_neutral: :technical:

dont let him dump all the bits at your place Yama!!... much better for him to see them all over his place and stay motivated!! ..  :thumb:

... mostly... for helping mates.... i dont mind helping anyone usually.... but they provide lunch and beverages .. if they require any of my (admittedly limited) tools... then tools stay with me when 'thats days bit is done' ... not left behind...

in your case... i would ask him to plan "appointments" with you... and provide transport ... or at least if you rode the Pig over then fuel also....

and in general... when the 'tech helper' has had enough for the day .. then thats it!!.. no marathon to midnight sessions unless its agreed on! ..

oh and get his own dang workshop manual!!  :thumb:

Off topic a bit.  I have a grandfather clock movement 100% disassembled and in a box, and I intend to rebuild it.  I took it apart ~8 years ago, but will I remember how it goes back together?!?!?!  We'll see, it's only gears right???

*sigh* I just want to go fast. Responsibly, of course.

I really underestimated how tricky it would be to assemble these carbs. They're not especially complicated, but the manuals all take for granted that you know what it should look like put together. I think I've just about got it, though.

What about plan B

http://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/mcy/3836789184.html

Granted, it's not $500.

I almost got another GS for $700, but it was a little questionable, and I thought "I've been there, done that. I want a challenge!". Well, I certainly got one. I'll get it though. The CB750c forum is pretty good (though not nearly as good as gstwins, naturally).

Without instructions, I certainly wouldn't be able to.
