2nd gear starting to slip?

Saw a bike for sale on Ebay, owner said that second gear is starting to slip. Is it going to need the bottom end done soon in other words? It wouldn't jusst be the clutch for some reason would it? Thanks.

Well 2nd gear typically takes the most abuse, cos its the most slammed into... especially when stunting or racing ... clutch slip may actually be worse in highest load... this sounds like its the gear itself... But in any case I'd take one of the more experienced engine guys word over mine anyway.

well, if it is the gear, you can always skip it, 1,3,4,5 etc. btw if the price is right, (plan on some service at some point) id say go for it.

Gears don't slip. Either the clutch is slipping or the gear is jumping out of gear.  Either the bike has alot of miles, or it's been thrashed pretty hard.
If you can fix it yourself and get it cheap it might be worth it.
But if you have to pay to have it fixed, it could end up being alot more than just buying a good bike with no problems. :dunno:

They just notice the slip in 2nd because of the reasons that Bob said. They get into 3rd after feeling 2nd slip and take it easy. Testing cars you hit the throttle in 4th (of 5 speeds) to get clutch slip and judge wear. Count on doing a clutch on that and add it to the cost of the bike.

You may not be able to get it safetied with a tranny that pops out of gear.  It might pass a safety at some shops and if the mechanic doesn't ride it.  You'd have to get it real cheap and do the repair yourself to be worthwhile.
