So, I just purchased my first GS500 today. :woohoo: She's a 2007 with 4500 miles on her and i got her for a steal from a pcs-ing soldier over here in Germany. Been laid down on each side but i was planning on going the naked route with the stock headlight anyways. So, I can't wait to share my build and stories with you guys, I have been lurking for about a month trying to learn everything I can about the awesomeness that is the GS500  -Danny

I actually really like that particular sticker/color combination. Especially with the black wheels. Keep the plastics!
When in doubt, empty the magazine.

I'm quite partial to that color combination, too. It's the same as the GS currently sitting in my garage.

I love the color too but the fairings are severely cracked and rashed. The lower part of the fairing is missing too. I was in the market for a Honda CB500F or KTM Duke 390, so i love the naked look but couldn't pass this deal up. I love the look of the F headlight on the naked frame. The past few hours I have spent with it have turned up a few things: one tail light was out, there's 2 dents on the tank, the fairings are toast, there's some scratches on the lower engine case and handlebar ends, the bars are aftermarket (Spiegel), the clutch lever appears to have been replaced, it needs front brake pads and the lights for the gauges do not work (haven't looked into it yet). Also the tank is shifted slightly to the right, I'm hoping i can just unbolt it and re-position it with no problems. I got to ride it on the short ride from his house to mine and I was a little worried that the bike wouldn't have enough power and that I would want something new soon like everyone says but I was really impressed. The power is very linear and I didn't feel like I was wringing the bike out to get every last ounce of power. I think i'm really going to like the girl!

So, I have made some progress! :D All of the fairings are removed and she already looks a thousand times better. Those crappy fairings really made the bike look beat up. Plans right now are to stick with the stock headlight, really love the look!

I changed the oil and cleaned and lubed the chain. I went to Hein Gericke for the oil filter and figured i would pick up some chain lube while i was at it. The lube was 13.99 euro and the guy behind the counter was super awesome. He told me to put the lube back and gave me a bucket with chain cleaner, chain lube, motorcycle cleaner and a sponge for 14.99 euro but the kicker was that it came with a 10 euro rebate! Score!

Going to order the headlight mounting brackets this week and some new tail lights and gauge lights since they are burned out. I seem to remember reading a thread about LED gauge lights can someone point me in that direction?

Are you thinking of bar end mirrors?

I'm not a huge fan of bar ends, i was thinking more of the emgo trapezoidal looking ones, kind of like the klx250sf

Suzi_Q

actually, does anyone have recommendations for mirrors with turn signals in them, I'm not really digging the stock turn signals. i also read that i would need to install resistors if they were led? any info on that or recommendations on mirrors? :dunno_black:

I got some cheap chinese turn signal/mirrors for pita years back and they've held up good.  Flashy-flashy when you push the button and you can see things behind you too!
