Has anyone noticed if the ignition advance (I have a 2001 with Bob's advancer) makes a difference in where the jetting should be set? I have been chasing a poorly running bike for almost a year now and I just don't know what to do next. The jettings that are in the matrix are not working for me, and I've tried going up and down 2 sizes on each jet and almost every combination of jets/washers that I could think of. My next step is to order a stock signal rotor and see if I can blame it on the ignition advance. Has anyone else had to rejet for the advancer before I drop $70 on a part that I might not need?

You should get it running correctly and GOOD before doing performance mods. Where are you located?

I'm in Maryland south of DC. Everything was running fine until my stock exhaust rusted out. I switched to a V&H system at that time and haven't been able to dial it in since.

i spent six months getting my ignition timing just right .Even tried 7 degrees extra advance ((to much)) tried different plugs(( hotter and colder  )) Different main jets from 130 to 152 ((to weak to to rich  ))
Different mid jets 60 to 65  .Different pilot jets 17.5 to 22.5 .Different pilot jet settings 1.5 turns in to 4 turns out .Needle was  a projet part which had 5 grooves  .also the catalytic converter in the pipes under the engine was cut out ,leaving the one in the start of the muffler the only one .
Here are my final settings 3 degrees  pilot jet 22.5..mid jet 60 as the Projet needle is thinner than standard needle..main jet 147  and spark plugs NGK  DPRE9EA-9  Float settings 13mm. pilot jet needle 3 turns out.. All this was done by plug reading and years of tuning M/CS
I have found this combination to work very well and economy is about 60 to 65 mpg.exhaust is quite throaty as well

I know you say its along the same time the exh went bad and had to be changed but I dont see that as being the issue. Many people (myself included) have changed exh and no issues.

Did you replace the exhaust gaskets when you put the V&H system on?

I did replace them. I also replaced them a 2nd time the last time I had the exhaust off for an oil change.

Exhaust gaskets are cheap.
They deform to conform to the header pipes and the engine head for a tight fit.
ALWAYS replace the exhaust gaskets.
