Magneto Cover Gasket Replacement

EDIT: I'm rewording and bumping this.

Is there anything special I should be aware of when removing the magneto cover? For example, I keep reading that you need to drain the oil before doing it but the hayne's manual doesn't say anything about draining the oil first (it mentions that you should expect some residual oil).
