[FIXED]4k RPM's when I stop???

I have been searching and haven't found a similar situation. Got the bike running and went for a ride today. Whenever I hit the clutch and start slowing down the bike will shoot up to about 4k RPM's. At first I thought throttle was sticking, but that doesn't seem to be the case. When warm bike idles around 1300 with choke off when I rev it up and let off the throttle the RPM's drop quickly.

It seems to only happen when in motion, slowing down. Any ideas?

Sounds like a classic air leak. Need to spray something like starting fluid or carburetor cleaner around the carbs to determine this. With the bike cold, you'll want to spray around the engine-side carb boots and see if the RPM jumps. If it does, you know you have a leak.

Carb cleaner should work for that test I imagine right? I will give it a try in the morning.

Carb cleaner caused around 200-500rpm bump in rpms when I sprayed near the right carb, nothing on the left.

What is the best way to tackle an air leak? The carbs both seem seated into the boots perfectly.

no more air leak from what i can tell by spraying starting fluid.  :woohoo:

However...

My RPM's now hover at about 5-6k when idling, so tomorrow i am dropping the idle screw and adjusting the clutch cable since that is the only thing i can think of to cause it.

yeah it sounds like ur idle is set too high. Reset that thang!!

The o-rings on the carb boots can be hard and flat. If the carb boots have been removed, then they must have new o-rings.

You can adjust your idle and don't you mean to adjust the choke cable? Adjusting clutch cable doesn't do anything for the idle. Choke cable too tight can up the rpm's.

Choke cable is fine, I meant THROTTLE cable, but it's late here and I can't think straight. So that's my plan, draw the idle screw all the way out then adjust down the throttle, start it up and reset the idle.

or 'tidying up' the under tank bit.... and cabletie the cables together too tight... which after half an hour i figured out what the hell i did?!!!!  :icon_rolleyes:

Holy cow was my throttle cable too tight. And I think I worked out why.

The PO had the Reserve and Carb lines switched at the frame petcock, but somehow had it running but bogging when trying to move. I assume to get it running required the idle screw to be screwed in VERY far. After fixing the lines, then pulling out my carbs to change the float needles/seats I just put the throttle cable on snug to where it sat on the idle screw. So lowering my idle screw did nothing since the cable was set so tight.

Backed the idle screw down all the way, loosened the throttle cable, and fine tuned the idle screw to get her idling warm, no choke at about 1250 rpm's.

Tomorrow I have about a 20 mile ride, so we will see how it goes.

Tomorrow might be pretty wet with some thunderstorms around us...pack your rain gear!

How are things coming? Stinky boots are to blame for air leaks sometimes.

PatheticPuma

Well right now not so great. Fixed my idle problem, went for a ride and parked it. Then I spent some time hunting a loose connection for my headlight. Found that and tried starting it up. Heard the starter click, then nothing. Assuming a dead battery from playing with the lights I tried jumping it, heard a click then nothing.

charged the battery overnight, tried again, nothing. Had a friend come and test the battery, passed. So then I put the bike on the center stand, put her neutral and tried turning the motor by Han via 19mm socket. Wouldn't budge clockwise but makes nearly one full rotation counter-clockwise.

from searching and reading past threads on here I am left to assume I either have a stuck bucket or bent valve.

Another twinner from Michigan is talking about driving over to help me look into the top of my motor in exchange for beer and a pick through my spare parts. Hopefully I can be back on the road soon.

That is sad situation. Pushing in the second gear helps? Does the engine turn when you push it in second gear? Cannot help otherwise as I don't know.
