Hey guys im about to do my first valve check in the next few weeks and i have a few questions.
1, Where can i get the suzuki valve adjustment tool for the GS500 all i can find is the GS550 etc like this one here:http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SUZUKI-VALVE-SHIM-TOOL-GS550-GS650-GS750-GS850-GS1000-GS1100-08-0017-35-2628-/161045225283?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item257f0b1f43

2, Do i have to use a specific shim from suzuki or can i get one from http://www.precisionshims.com.au/

3, While i have the valve cover off is there any other checks i should do?

Cheers

MotionPro makes the valve tool, it's on ebay, like $15 bucks. Works great.

You need 29.5mm diameter shims. Then whatever thickness is needed of course. I didn't use OEM ones, just ebay'ed the proper diameter and thickness.

While its off, check the head cover gasket(mine leaked after re-install. Chain cam chain tension and what not. If it's not making noises you're probably good but you'll be staring right at it so give it a feel. If you have a manual and a torque wrench, just make sure all the bolts on the cam journals and such are torqued to spec.

There's really not much in the top end of the GS. 2 cams, 4 shims, a cam chain, and that's about it honestly

Thanks for your reply :) the tool that i linked is made by motion pro and says its for a number of bikes including (89-07 GS500E) but says that a 2 valve model will that work on a GS500 2004?
Its obvious what the difference between a GS500 and GS500F is but whats the difference between a GS500 and GS500E?

The way I understand it (see the first column in the table on my aging [Parts Fiche Links] page) is like this:

  • '89 - '00 models were designated GS500E
  • '01 - '03 models were designated GS500
  • '04+ (faired) models are designated GS500F

As far as I know, the engine is the same for all models.

Yeah that makes sense. I'm not sure if that tool is the right one or not though
