So .........follow up to rebuilding the motor on my son's gs500.
We foound a lower end on ebay for 250 and saved his top end.

Some things i learned from the experiences.
Local dealers parts dept are clueless here.
Front sprockets for the 1992 motor are different than later models.
Teach your kids how to maintain their vehicles before you teach em to drive.
never ever send a key in a plain white envelope via ups.
Re-keying a gs500 costs about 100 bucks.
Working on the bike is a great father son bonding experience

Terrific forum ......thanks for the help.

2 ok
3 please spread this wisdom. understanding why a vehicle of any size shape or variety does what it does, and the ability to diagnose, repair, and seek knowledge instead of opening a wallet is very admirable.

personally I would not want to break and repin a timing chain, given its speed of travel, number of revolutions, and costs associated with its failure. inpsection of external drive chains is trivial in comparison, and a worn or poorly assembled master link will show in just a few revolutions there.

the few timing chain jobs I've done were time consuming but straight forward, and thankfully the vehicles are still running, and running well. looking back I could not trust a non standard (hacked) timing chain and/or master at speed, on those vehicles. just something to consider. :)
